HELP: Grinding sound coming from my steering column when I turn!!??

413 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  ligament
Hey all,
I have a grinding sound coming from my steering column when I turn. I was in an accident a year ago, airbag deployed, and I had a new steering wheel put on. Up until a few weeks ago, no grinding sound whatsoever. It sounds like plastic on plastic scraping but perhaps it is metal on metal, I'm not sure.
What could this be and how can I fix it? PLEASE HELP!

This happened on my sisters 95 golf sport and I just sprayed WD-40 in the gap between the wheel and the column. It soon stopped making the noise.

take off the front and bottom steerig wheel cover and just drip some oil right on the ring where the wheel turn... then just turn the wheel a bunch of times untill it goes away... this happened to me a couple weeks ago

WD is too liquid...take a little lithium white grease and put it on the ring with the tip of a screw driver.....then turn the wheel towork it on...no need to remove the wheel, you can do it from underneath...

Where exactly is this "ring"? I'm pretty naive when it comes to the steering column. could somebocy post pics for me? also, should I definately use the lithium grease vs. wd40?
let me know and thanks!

you can see the metal ring (silver) and the piece thats rubbing if you look in between the wheel and steering column. The rubbing piece is a thin piece of metal on the wheel. Use lithium grease around the ring and the sound will be gone once its worked in.

by the way, what is that metal arm that rubs on the metal ring? the little arm on the left side....what does it do, and will lithium grease harm its function?
? thanks!
