Help installing replacement bulbs - 2000 GTI (US)

397 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Robor
I've got my bulbs (4 H7's and 2 H3's) and I've finally got a chance to try installing them. I thought a few hours before leaving for Thanksgiving at my brothers would be perfect. Bzzzzz. Either I'm an idiot or these things are a PITA to install. Maybe both? Anyway, I can't figure out how to go about this. Can anyone help or point me to a page that details the removal/installation procedure? Believe me, I've searched and I can't find anything.
Thanks a bunch and Happy Thanksgiving to all the US folks!

Rob

Remove the bumper, that makes getting to them easiest.
But I used a spatula as a mirror to see what I'd be reaching for. Then went to work.
Changed hi-lo-fogs-cities in an hour. No bumper removal.
What bulbs did you get?

I got the Phillips Blue Vision for the low beams, Phillips Vision Plus for high beams, and Osram H3 AllSeason for the fog lights.
Remove the bumper? How difficult is it to remove/replace the bumper. I haven't worked on cars since I sold my '70 Nova SS (350). Working on these new cars is a whole different animal.
This is probably gonna sound like a dumb question but I've got to ask. How do the lights come out? I mean, do they come out the front or are they removed from inside? I had a friend (he doesn't own a VW) look at it and he wanted to pull the retaining clip off the edge of the light casing and pull the bulbs out the front. I didn't want to do that because I thought it might break the seal and cause it to fog up. Is he right?
Thanks again,
Rob

Re: Help installing replacement bulbs - 2000 GTI (Robor)

bumper takes all of 5 minutes or so to remove... lights are just 4 bolts after that... anyways, if you know what u are reaching for, and know how to take off each clip for each bulb it is very easy... most difficult for me is the pass. side highbeam bulb(i haven't found a way of comfortably fittin my hand in there, and since i've broken both wrists, and had surgery on one, they really start to hurt after a few mintues of reaching...) low beams are VERY simple to do, and the fogs are pretty easy as well. as for cities, just pull the red/brown wire and the bulb comes out..

as for install, slide the metal clip on the backings towards the middle of the car, then pull off the black backings, that reveals all the bulbs, just undo their specific clips/wiring plugs and there ya go!
