My new car plan.....

ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS
Which 2002 VW should I buy?
?
I am ready to get a new car. This will be my first VW. I have done a couple of years research to come to this final decision, and now I am stumped. I currently drive a Chevy pick-up that has been slightly modified. I know what I want my VW to look like, I just don't know which powerplant I'd like to use. It will have a manual transmission, and I could care less about luxury items. Right now it's all about the engine. The rims will also be replaced, regardless of model/trim.
115hp will suit me fine, however, it would be nice to have a more sporty option. I am new to turbos, nitrous, and cams, etc. and I don't wish to heavily modify a brand new car's engine. That leaves me with the new 200hp/6-speed/VR6 or the 1.8T GTI's. I know that the 1.8T is a so called "tuners dream", it makes good power, it's light, and it can be fairly easily pushed over the 250hp level. The new VR6 (200hp), however, is also a good reliable engine. It makes good power, it does not have problems associated with turbos, it will be mated to the 6-speed tranny(hopefully an improvement), but it is a slightly heavier engine.
The car will be a daily driver, but well taken care of. I would like to take it to some shows, and maybe even some autocrossing events. I am not concerned with racing other cars, I would just like to improve my driving and have fun in a reliable and sporty car. Anything can be better than my truck, and VW has provided me the best option, with the best quality.
I have an approx. $20000 budget, but this does not include aftermarket mods. I have about $3000 set aside for modifications. Suspension, rims, tires, lights, tint, grille, intake, exhaust, etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
THE NEW PLAN IS EXPLAINED IN MY REPLY TO THIS POST
WHAT DO YOU THINK....ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Re: Help me decide...$20000/2dr/manual/GTI or GL/VR6 or 1.8T or 2.slo? (feuerdog)

My preference is the smooth linear power of the VR6.
I am not sure which is the best motor to auto-X, but I suspect that the 1.8t might not be the best because of the turbo and the associated lag below 2K RPM. This is not from experience, but from what I have heard about turbo motors in general.
The 1.8T will certainly give you the most bang for the buck. In fact, you may be a great candidate for the DE GTI. My advice is to drive them and decide for yourself.

If your budget is $20K, there is no way in HELL you will be able to afford the 200hp VR6. I doubt those will go for less than MSRP (around 23K) for at least a year and a half after they are introduced.
Sounds like your best option is the 1.8T. Great engine. Great car. And it won't break the bank - leaving plenty of cash for mods.
You might also consider a WRX. Without mods, the car is impressive, and in wagon trim, very practical. Kinda ugly though.

Re: Help me decide...$20000/2dr/manual/GTI or GL/VR6 or 1.8T or 2.slo? (Sunil)

Even though it's been limited.. thanks for the response.
I have come up with a plan that will negate this current list of choices.
PROBLEM:
The new 201hp VR6/6-speed will most likely be a delayed introduction, and/or have limited availability at first. Not to mention a high early sticker price( which can be avoided ).
SOLUTION:
I want a VW now, so I will get the 2.0 GL 5-speed.
It will be enough of a car for now, and it's better than not having a VW at all. I can put a fat down payment on it and finance it for 4 years instead of 5. By doing this I can trade it in without being "upside down" on it. In about a year or so, I can trade it in on the then established 201hp VR6/6-speed, or, if more info is available, the new MkV Golf that should be out in the 2003/2004 time period.
Sound like a good plan?
Thanks again for the help.

Wanted to do the same thing 'cept there were no GLs in a four-state area (at least that's what three diff dealers told me after trying computer locates) and almost every 4-dr GLS came with an auto trans. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif The few available 5-spds seemed to be loaded (luxury/cold weather/monsoon). Did the math and realized the GTI wasn't really that much more.
Now I am SO glad I passed on the GLS. Helped that I got a great deal on the GTI.

I don't know what I like better.......everything about the turbo, or the really cool key?!

The main reason I went with the GTI is the work involved in fixing it up.....because it's already an awesome car. The only problem with it that I have (besides those stupid cup holders, and the cheesy Monsoon system) is the massive potential of the 1.8t.
I have found so much to add-on and fix-up!
After driving a pick-up around for the past 6 years....almost any new car would be an improvement, but......
I think this car is great.......(tears of joy inserted here).

Re: My new car plan..... (feuerdog)

My advice would be to get a VR6. I have a VR6 myself and I have 2 friends that drive 1.8T's and a couple that drive VR6's. The VR6 has a much smoother engine, and the exhaust note is definately deeper and sounds better. I haven't driven the 200hp VR6 yet, but with 200 hp and a 6-speed tranny, it should be a lot faster. However, the 1.8T's are easier to upgrade, and if you live in the mountains (high elevation) you won't find a huge difference in power between both cars.

Re: My new car plan..... (MR. V)

I agree with an earlier post, you are never going to find a VR6 for 20k. The VR6 equiped cars represent the flagship powerplant in the the golf/Jetta, and they are usually equiped very well. You might be able to special order a stripped out VR6 for like 22k. Have you driven any of the VW engines you are proposing? If you are cool with the 2.0, get that. It is definitely adequate for normal driving. However, I think the lack of power could get boring, but that's just me. Based on your finances, the 1.8t is your best bet for a fast VW. If you can swing a VR6, without a doubt, get that.
