me wife & i have been toying & are pretty firm about the idea of trading in the trabant...er, passat wagon & getting an AWD vehicle. after getting stuck in the snow last year w/ a 3 month old baby, my wife really wants a 4x4 or awd.
i turn to the vast knowledge of the vortex. help me...

If this was for me the Passat would not even garner consideration because it is automatic-only. But then again, I would probably be just as happy with a FWD 1.8T.
A Legacy GT wagon looks very sharp and you can get it with a stick. Not very fast, but it's a very nice car.
If you want an SUV, the Pathfinder SE is probably one of the sportiest of the bunch. I would buy one of those before I bought a Liberty or Montero Sport. I think it is more expensive though.

From your group, I chose the Legacy GT Wagon. But I would also take a look at the Toyota Highlander.

Check out the Outback VDC and LL Bean. They're both priced less than the Passat and have more powerful engines. No stick as far as I know.

uh-uh, wifey wants a NEW car & these were the ones we agreed on after a grueling 3 hour conversation w/ me saying "but honey..."

fast? my wife will be driving it so that doesn't matter. auto? well, she has one now, er i do since she's driving my car. pathfinder? hmmm, haven't liked a pathfinder body since a couple of changes ago.

jerry is 6 years old now & has 94,xxx miles (95 wagon glx). he's still running fine but....the costs of upkeeping is starting to nickel & dime me to death. i really don't want to get rid of him.
speedy is 3 years old & running fine (98 gl). plus, i'm planning on running her into the ground (have a 90 mile roundtrip daily which will increase IF i get this promotion) & since she's a 4 cyl, she gets better mpg.
part for part, it will be cheaper in the long run to keep the jetta.

It has to be one of the one's mentioned in your poll? In that case, I would choose the Passat GLS. The lack of stick-shift, if your wife wants an auto, isn't really a detriment then.
If you can expand the list, I would suggest the Isuzu Axiom. It's a "real truck" while still being a lot less truck-like than other Isuzu products. I'm also very pro-Pathfinder.
And, of course, the WRX wagon. Duh.

The rear seat of the WRX wagon may be a bit tight for a family car, but then again, Bill's flesh turd is not 6 feet tall like I am.

the montero has had problems. the montero sport is a different animal.
& lackey, yes, it has to be one mentioned. i thought of the axiom but pam nixed that idea. she thinks it's fugly & the others are cute. *shudder*

. plus, it's too small. i would get a jetta 1.8t wagon if we were gonna get something that size

Unless you really want a Sportute. Then I'd go with a Subie or the Toyota Highlander.

What about a trailblazer? Check out the new LR Freelander (pretty sharp, and the one near me is stickered at $25,500). or why not a Porsche C4?

The Axiom is one of the best looking 4x4's out there, imo. Also, the new CR-Vs just came out, available with stick and VTEC. My mother's '97 Auto does great in the snow-I was always the one stuck at the bottom when the driveway was covered

test drove a trailblazer the other day. ok but for the money they were asking...i'd rather have a regular blazer. almost equipped as well & lots less $$$.

Land Rover's new soft roader. Sharp-looking, lots of nooks and crannies inside, but totally gutless, engine-wise, in my opinion. I drove a demo model at a local LR dealership.
