Hey guys. Im looking into buying this 98 Jetta VR6. Its in awesome shape mechanically, but it probably needs about 700 dollars of body work and my dad seems to think there is a "leak" in the windsheild. They guy wants 10,500 but will drop price a little for the body problems. The thing concerning both of us is the windsheild leak. Is that a very serious thing? All there is really to show that that is there is a small sound of rushing air at around 40+ Let me know what you think. Does anyone else hear a rushing air sound in their jets or golfs? Also how much would you guess it would cost to fix? Thanks

I get an air rushing sound in my car. I don't know how loud yours is, but mine isn't very loud. I've also been in many dubs with the same noise. Unless the thing actually leaks water into the car, I don't think it's a big problem. It's just a normal thing for many cars to have outside air make noise inside the cabin. Just look into it carefully and try to see if a seal is broken between the body and the windsheild.

Well, I would say its a little louder than in a normal car, kinda sounds like the deforster but on a really low setting...i dunno. Can anyone else back him up about this common VW occurence? I really want to get this car...

It has 58,000 miles( just about, like 57,900) and the interior is very nice, although kinda smells like its been smoked in. There's two fairly deep scratches no more than .5-1 inches long, but theyre down to the metal. Also theres a 3 inch long crease in the drivers side fender. None of the damage is his fault however. Also, he alreay has Neuspeed intake and exhaust, lowered with bilsteins and neuspeed springs (i think thats what he said) and then he has 16 inch TSW wheels (they look like BBS RK) wraped with prada's. What do you say?

well the damage was from a break in and also someone backed up into his jet. the interior and the mechanics of the car are awesome, all i would need to do is to take care of the body. I mean high quality stuff is on there and its rides awesome. I dunno, but back to the windsheild deal, anyone else get this? Oh, I also ran a car fax and there isnt anything documented to be wrong with it.

I wasn't saying they actually have a PROBLEM with this, I was saying that road and wind noise is common. It sounds like air is coming into the car, thus the sound you may be hearing. It is more common with our cars due to their squarish shape. I don't think it's a big deal unless you notice a crack in the windsheild or a seperation of the windsheild from the body.

I don't know what cars are going for where you live, but in Michigan that wouldn't be a very good deal. There was a guy selling a 97 GLX with 64K miles for $9,900. It was an older guy, the car was in perfect shape, had every option (except auto trans.), and he had it for sale for a few weeks before he finally sold it. I don't know how much he finally accepted for it. I wanted to get it, but I have to sell mine first if I buy privately. I am currently looking at getting a 98 GTI VR6 with 61K from a stealership for $11,000. That also is in perfect shape and without any modifications I looked at getting a GLX with mods at first, but the problem is you know the car has been driven harder then a stock one owned by some old, responsible adult. If you buy one that has been modded you're going to be paying to repair things that the previous owner did. I would feel alot better paying for repairs on a car if they were because I drove it hard rather then because some other guy did and then got rid of it by selling it to me.

I got a brand new windshield for absolutely free. I was able to do this twcie actually. There are companies that file a report to your insurance company for you that say you need a windshield replacement. There is no deductable, and the windshield guy actually came to my house to install for me, which was also free. See if you can hunt down one of these companies. I live in Florida, so this might be a Floridian insurance holder's priviledge, but see what you can find.Good luck- The car sounds like a good deal to me, considering the prices down here for that year and model run about $12-13g's.

i would stay away from a modded used car- you know its been driven hard and unless you know the guy well, you have no way of telling if it was taken care of. plus if you buy a totally stock car, you can do whatever you want to it. but if you really want it, go have it checked out at a shop and have a used car check/compression test done, or do one yourself.
as far as the noise goes, my 95 glx has a wind noise that is louder than most cars that i;ve been in. like somebody else said, unless its leaking water or you can feel air, dont worry about it.
personally, i'd keep looking.
