What's up everyone,
It seems that nobody has a problem that some other A3 owner hasn't had before, so maybe someone can give me a hand with this one.
To no surprise, my A3 GTi is having some minor problems (my Passat was a nightmare), and this time it's the clutch. I was sitting in stop and go for about 45 minutes the other day waiting to get on the George Washington, and my clutch felt like something inside it popped/cracked. The clutch action used to be quiet, and with a certain amount of pressure. After I heard the pop/crack, the pressure has remained the same (thank God), but now there's this grinding type noise every time I press the clutch. The noise sounds like two pieces of plastic grinding against each other, and the pedal feels like it's grinding when I press it. I asked my mechanic about it over the phone (I'm a college student and my mechanic is in my hometown), and he said that if the pressure's fine, then I shouldn't worry about it too much. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem, and what were thre results/repercussions? I know my mechanic told me not to worry, but he says that to me a lot because he doesn't like to get me worried (he knows how much I love the car). So if anyone knows what I'm talking about, can I get your input?
Also, I've been noticing that most people tend to say that dub's are fairly reliable cars. This GTi is my second VW, and I have to say the reliability is only so-so. Like I said, my Passat was a nightmare, and it wasn't a junker or a salvage or anything (bought it from my cousin). The GTi is a little better, but I'm still having little problems here and there (sensors don't work right, lights have a mind of their own somtimes). I realize I'm comparing my experience with my mother's cars (two Honda's), so is my frame of reference just bad? Or am I just a sucker?
Anyway, any help is appreciated, thanks for reading.
Ed.

Re: Help! My clutch is making cracking noises.... (Fast16v)

Sounds like bad news my friend. Sounds to me like the throw out bearing is bad, and nine times out of ten, if that is true, you will also need a new clutch. If that turns out to be the problem, replace everything...every bearing, pressure plate, clutch disk etc...the only thing you should usually save is the flywheel, and that will probably need to be machined. Good luck...clutch problems suck.

Re: Help! My clutch is making cracking noises.... (am1899)

For Christ's sake, a new clutch? Seriously? It's only 62k, my Passat didn't need a change until 65 or so. Damn.
I'm not getting any slip at all on the clutch, and everything about it is the same performance-wise, except for the grinding feeling, and of course the grinding noise. So I guess I'm gonna have to get it checked out then, and probably have to spend all my Christmas-gift-getting-money on some car parts, splendid.
Thanks for the help, any further input would be really appreciated now, excuse me while I go break something.

sounds strange...is it making noise only when the clutch is engaged? dont know if its the throwout bearing then. is your car a VR6 or 2.0? throwout bearing noise is pretty common on VR6s, but it usually only makes noise when the clutch pedal isnt engaged. my throwout bearing has been making noise for quite awhile w/o anything going wrong.

Re: Help! My clutch is making cracking noises.... (TrekRadoVR6)

The grinding noise happens only when I depress the clutch pedal, no other times. If I had to make an intuitive guess based on the sound and feel alone, I would say it feels like a rod or bar snapped under the clutch, and now I'm grinding the two jagged edges against each other (the action is pretty rough). However, it's important to note I think, that the clutch pressure is still the same. So although there's the grinding sensation, it doesn't require any more pressure to get the clutch down than it did before the noise came about.
I drive a 1997 VR6 GTi, if that helps with the evaluation. I'm thinking it's not a disaster since the clutch still works well, and I've had to change a clutch before, and this one doesn't feel anything like that one did before I changed it (on my previous car).
Thanks for the great responses, maybe this isn't so bad after all?

Haha, that's happened to me too, on this car also. The fuse hatch seems to get dislodged a lot. Another good one is "oh my god, my brakes are out!" when your floor mats curl up on a rainy day under your pedal.

It sounds to me like all the little bearings on the throw out bearing are going bad. Don't blame it on the car, VW's don't like it when you don't show them love. The previous owner might have been unusually hard on the clutch. You know keeping it in gear at light. revving it up to 5,000 dumping the clutch and telling all your friends to look at the smoke. I would bet it was the clutch. It should last for a while the problem is when it finally goes it will destroy everything around it as all the components in that area are soft material. I would change it before it hurts the flywheel. If you have the extra cash dump a lightened flywheel and 3 puck in it. Just to keep the blame away from VW's in general I had a 2.0 that ran flawless except for a water pump until I sold it at 120,000 miles. From what I hear it is still doing greaat. I also have a friend Reza that brags about his 89 GTI 16v it has 300,000+ miles on it and has never been taken apart. He has only done routine maintenence to it. So don't let anyone tell you a VW won't last forever if you take care of it right.

i've had this grind since i got the car 3 months ago. It still runs good. I know i'm going to need a new clutch soon...
Now I know what else I need to have replaced. But since it still runs and i'm also a poor college student, i'm gonna leave it be for a little while longer....

Re: Help! My clutch is making cracking noises.... (JimGTIVR6)

I actually had a similar problem with my clutch in my VR6. The throwout bearing was making noise whenever the clutch was engaged. And before I could get everything fixed, everything went to hell when I had to get on it to make a left into traffic. It cost me bigtime - I needed a new clutch disk, new pressure plate, and had to have the flywheel machined. The mechanic told me that someone was very rough on the clutch because the pressure plate had heat marks on it that were nasty - I saw them. For future reference, easy on the burnouts, and always put the car in neutral at lights. Or get yourself a nasty clutch that is built to handle excessive heat. I hope everything works out for you.

No but throw out bearings do when they are going bad, and it sucks when it happens because you have to do the whole clutch most of the time.

I should have paid more attention in english class.

Re: Help! My clutch is making cracking noises.... (Project20v)

i had a knocking sound...the rivets on my pressure plate popped off and after a while the loose springs cut a hole in my tranny. it was a very harsh sound when the pedal was pressed in, very costly too

If anyone knows of a good clutch place in Southern California, let me know. I do not have the cash, but it has to get done. Someplace reasonable & experienced.
