My 97 Passat is stuck in park I push the shift in for upwards of 20 minutes and sometimes it will click in. I also noticed all of my break lights are not working and can not help and think these are related. Please Help! Even if anyone knows how I can just get it in drive to get to a dealer.

While your vehicle is not a B5 (that is, if you're in the states) this is a problem that pretty much any car that's an auto can suffer.
I would look at your brake light switch (should be near the pedal), or the brake light fuse.

Yeah this is B4 platform. Remove the plastic shifter cover and there will be a plastic piece that locks the shifter in place. All you have to do is pull up on it. Its partly spring and actuator activated but you can just pull it up.

I had the same issue. do a search under "jlakhani" user and you will see the threads and solution.
