I bought my '97 GTi about 8 months ago, and the alarm didn't chirp most of the time. However, it does chirp every now and then (about one day a month). I'd say it's due to the crappy electronics in our cars, and that it's not really a "fixable" problem, but that's been my experience.
As for the DRL, I've seen posts about it in this forum, do a search and you'll find something I'm sure. I wouldn't think the car would look better without the lights, but that's my worthless opinion.

To disable the DRLs, you just need to pull a relay. Not sure which one, though, because I like having DRLs. Safety is good. But do a search, you'll find the answer.
Your alarm isn't chirping anymore because one of the alarm switches is dirty/stuck or broken. Check all the switches on your car and find out which is misbehaving. There's one for the hood (either located near the strut tower or in the hood latch assembly), one for each door, and one for the hatch. Have fun.

Any ideas why the whole keyless entry system might only work intermittently? I can always arm the alarm (with a chirp) from the door, but the remote only works ~50% of the time. I've changed the batteries thinking it was that, but no luck...

Something to do with the factory remotes sucking, I would imagine. Mine do the same thing... so I'm slapping a real alarm system in soooon. The new guy is sitting on a shelf beside me right now. mmmm security and range. (strokes alarm system lovingly)

I'm a little disturbed by your unbridled affection for your alarm...
j/k...
But anyway, I figured as much. I guess the bizarre little 'remote under the chin' thing will have to work for now... (it's even more bizarre looking when the keyless doesn't work and nothing happens.)
