If you can find a non-a/c golf in the junkyard, you can use that. I found an `87 Fox in the junkyard, simply used the pulleys (crank, water pump, didn't need to do anything with the alternator.)

There's a bunch of info on this topic, however, I'll give it to you now without having to search. The easiest is way is to hit the junkyard and find any Fox (ac or not) -- you don't have to find a nonac Golf...That's really hard to come by as well, depending on where you live. Unbolt the crank pulleys and keep everything from the Fox. Go back to your car, and take off the crank pulleys. Mix and match both sets of crank pulleys, flip them around, whatever, and you will end up with the correct setup - one from your GTi and one from the Fox. Unfortuantely, I can never remember which one goes where from which car, so I can't give more info than that. Also, you can take off one of the (water pump if I remember correctly) pulleys and save weight/rotational mass. The Fox crank setup is heavy as sh!t, so don't use that silly cast iron piece. I've done this to both of my cars (85 Golf, 92 GTi) with perfect results. You may need to get 2 new belts though - one for the crank to alternator and then the ps, h20 set. I used to have the Gates #'s, but lost em. Sorry.

I am a little confussed as to why you can ditch the H20 pulley. What do you run this with if you ditch the pulley? And you say the cast iron Fox crank pulley is heavy as hell but you said to use this? I am confused.

He meant ditch the larger pulley on the water pump, and keep the smaller outer one. I bet you will have to turn it around though to line up with the outer crank pulley. Not sure about the cast iron pulley. I have never used the fox setup, but wonder how they got over the alternator positioning. It needs to project out a 1/4 " from its present place or new bracketry is required. Am I missing something?

Does anybody know the exact crank pulley I need from the fox. outer or inner. and waterpump... I don't want to buy extra parts from the junkyard if i don't need them. Thanks for the help guy's I think I got the rest figured out http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Help, trying to get rid of A/C (Wickeddub)

This is great. From what is sounds to me like all that is required is to get an inner crank pulley off any fox and bolt it to your outer golf pulley, then turn around the small outer water pump pulley and ditch the large water pump pulley, then put a 1/4" spacer on the alt. pulley. Get the correct belts (maybe a few off the fox) and you are set. Does this sound right to everyone else also?
I have read many things on this before but all of them seem to be mixed and matched between other things. I have heard about turning the H20 pulley around but not ditching the large one. And I have heard about the crank pulley off of a non-ac golf but those are damn hard to find. Great info here. I have always wanted to ditch my a/c but never knew exactly what was needed. Thanks for the info guys

ok, i DID this on my 1990 Jetta w/ P.S. I found an 86 GTI non a/c, w/p.s. car. I used all of the brackets off of the 86, and the inner crank pulley. I also removed the inner h20 pump pulley. Everything lined up fine, and the belts were e-z to find, just tell em you have a car with p.s. and no a/c and they use stock belts!

I think you need to take the center nut off ONLY if the crank pulley is the big cast iron job, never saw one so I don't know how it's fastened, the one I got was the stamped steel one, you need the appropriate size allen socket to take off the four small bolts that's all
