I have a set of 17x8" rims that I need to mount tires on. I was wondering who has mounted anything less than a 225mm wide tire on a 8" wide rim? How do you like it and would you do it again? I care less about handling and more about trying to maintain over 50 mpg on the freeway. Any closeup pictures of side wall height would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Help w/tires for 17x8" rim (ROCKRLR)

ROCKRLR, I drive a lot of freeway miles and dont want to lose too many mpg. Do you by any chance keep track of mpg's? and if you do, do you know what you lost when you made your switch? ----Maybe I'm just being too anal about the mpg thing and shouldn't worry about it.

First, asthetically, your sidewalls will look nasty because they will pull outwards as they stretch over the rim.
Second, as someone else said, you have the problem of rims getting scuffed easier.
Third, it is not that much more rubber on the road if you are thinking about 205's. Only 20mm is not going to make that much of a difference.
Fourth, VW's with the sport package come with 225 width tires on them and are still rated at the same mpg as those that come with the 205's.
Fifth, just go with 225's, when you need to swerve around something during all that freeway driving, you'll be happy you have the extra grip.

Re: Help w/tires for 17x8" rim (mbeer)

What you are really asking is "Will a narrower, lower-performance tire have a lower rolling resistance and thus increase my gas mileage?"
The answer is yes, but not by much. Go to http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/resistance.htm for a full explanation of the effect of rollling resistance on gas mileage.
