help with a loose wheel on 85 jetta

Help :mad :My right rear wheel is loose. The lugs are tight but the wheel is loose i think the wheel bearings are bad. I'm thinking of trying to take the wheel off and the drum in the morning but i'm a little scared that after it's apart that it won't go back together. I had a heart attack a month ago. So being out in the cold takes a lot out of me and my stretch isn't back to normal yet . Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Mark

explain what you mean by loose....can you just feel a little play when you shake the wheel back and forth? or is there like 1" of play in the wheel???

Yeah, youre wheel bearing's shot. Ive had to do it before. Take off the wheel, then take off the cap on the end of the drum, then undo the nut under there. Then take everything off the stub axle. Go buy a new wheel bearing, and make sure to PACK it with grease. After that, put the inner bearing back on the stub axle. After that, you slide the drum on again, and put the outer bearing part on. Tighten the nut again according to EXACTLY what the bently says, otherwise itll get fried in 2 days. Good luck, and its not very strenuous work, so you should be fine. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

HOLY ****E!!
That things REALLY dead! Yeah, rear wheel bearing is dead simple. Just make sure you don't over tighten the nut http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Should take about 45 minutes if it's your first time to do inner and outer bearing.

Yep yep. the last thing anybody needs is a cling-on wheel. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

If you've got discs then do the same. Remove the hub, replace the bearing, repack it with grease, tighten the bolts and that's it.
But a loose wheel doesn't necessarily mean that your wheel bearing's shot. Before you go out and buy a new bearing, tighten everything up first. See if that solves your problem. If you can hear a grinding noise after you've checked everything (ie. bolts, calipers, hub, shaft nut) then you've got bad bearings.
