Read this in a VW magazine recently, so some of you may already know about this.
If you look down the filler neck, you will see a small projection. This is a valve which lets air out of the fuel tank; press is when filling up with the filler nozzle or your finger, and you will hear air being released from the tank, allowing you to get in almost an extra gallon of fuel.
Just one of those little things that I love about my VW.

Thanks, I never knew that could be bad. Can you elaborate? I'd looked on my 2000, but didn't think they were putting them on anymore as I couldn't see it (obviously not looking closely enough).

Re: Helpful Tip When Filling Up (O_loung1)

Its not....
other than letting fumes into the atmosphere...
Its there as a saftey feature... Used mostly be mechanics to vent the system and relieve it of pressure before they pull lines off to swap fuel filters
