I was just reading my owners manual today and was looking for anything that implied the infamous *wait till 5k miles for first oil change*.
Where is this implication in the manual *and* if its not there where did this--I'll call it "old wives tale"
start?
Also I looked for anything in the manual thay implied there is a special break-in oil and couldn't find anything more than it stating that there was a "high quality all-season 5W40 weight oil fill from the factory".
Wher did this rumour come from?

(As for the car; 2200 miles and not one problem or complaint
)

Re: Here we go again: Wait till 5k mile first oil change & break-in oil question (E36BMW)

I went 6 months which was only 3000 miles for me. Mileage doesn't tell the whole story. I drive 10 minutes to work, only go 3 miles. Somebody else might drive 10 minutes and go 10 miles. Either way the engine is running for 10 minutes. So waiting till 5000 miles for me seemed unreasonable because my mileage and engine hours are probably way out of whack. Not to mention the oil was put in my car in february, but I didn't get the car till April.

Re: Here we go again: Wait till 5k mile first oil change & break-in oil question (not_too_shabby)

this whole thing had been discussed to death , but I found out from a vw mechanic with 40 years experience that vw uses a special low detergent formula oil to assist in the break in of the engine. It is recommended to leave it in for the full 5,000 miles (7500 miles in Europe)( I skipped my first scheduled free oil change because I only had 3400 miles on my car) before changing it so that the engine components will seat properly. There have been many people on these forums advocating changing oil at 1,000 miles as well. Putting synthetic in at 1,000 miles and everyone is free to choose as they will. I waited on so have many of the people on these forums , each for their own reason.

A Competent Sales Professional should have advised you to change
your oil every 5K OR 6Months whichever comes first...at all intervals...
10K, 15K...or 6Months. If you only drive 5K a year; your car should be
serviced TWICE...

...and where is this documented (owners manual, dealer TSB etc.)?

You should probably find this information in the Maintenance Booklet, as well
as Tips & Advice(3.2)...This info is so Standard; I cannot believe that you were
not advised about it...
