Hesistation problems... 99.5 MKIV GTI. Help!!!

760 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  vdublover
I'm wondering if there is a fix for the hesistation that occurs when I am accelerating from a standstill stop in first gear (sometimes when I shift into 2nd too). When I engage the clutch from a standstill at lower RPM's (i.e. not at idle speed), the car hesistates for about 1-3 seconds (even with the gas pedal fully depressed) before the car accelerates. I seriously doubt I'm bogging the engine down, and it's not like I'm launching the car from a standstill. BTW, the car has done this since new.
I've heard of other MKIV 2.0 owners that have had this problem, but I couldn't find anything when I went to the search function. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Got any fixes for this? I swear I almost got t-boned trying to make it across a lane of traffic this morning! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I had the same problem with my 2000 Jetta. I got a Neuspeed P-Flo and the problem wasn't nearly as bad. There still is some hesitation, but I learned to just rev the engine just a little more. Hasn't happened in a while.
About what RPM is the engine acting like it's bogging or hesitating?

Here is your fix: For some reason, the 2.0 engine leaks oil into the intake tube. I have found that this causes the engine to stumble if there is a lot of accumulation. To fix this problem, I just take my intake tube off every 10,000 miles or so and clean it out with intake cleaner. Make sure not to get any of the cleaner on the mass air flow sensor, as this will ruin it. The sensor looks like a computer chip, and should be pretty easy to work around. While I have the intake tube off, I usually clean the throttle body too, since it seems to run smoother after this is done. This should fix your problem, I know it worked for me. If you need any clarification, let me know. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

What RPM? Hmmmm... I'll have to try it tomorrow and find out. I've been dying to get a P-Flo for my 2.0, but I'm still recovering from 7 months of unemployment.

Vdublover : Thanks for the tip! I'll check out my intake tube and see if there is any oil... kinda reminds me of my G60 (checking the sc/ic tube for oil... sign of failing charger)!

damn, damn, DAMN! Is there some sort of support group for us poor folks who can't afford a stinkin mod? Hell, I had to replace a headlight bulb and it set me back a few days!
Isn't there something I can rip OUT of the car

Seriously, though... I do appreciate the feedback guys.

Putting a K&N pannel filter in helped a little bit. I also suspect that it has to do with ****ty air intake. I'm going to hack a CAI to my stock airbox as soon as it warms up outside.

Another thing that helps is to remove the bottom part of the box, take a dremel and smooth out the ridges in it. I did it for a friend before, never got a real good drive of his car afterwards, but he said that there was a small improvement in the throttle response.

I took vdublover's oil in the intake a couple of steps farther,
.
I found that the intake collected what I feel is an excessive amount of engine oil. The oil doesn't stop at the throttle body eather, the intake manifold all the way to the top of your intake valves gets soaked with oil. I don't know wtf vw wanted to achieve with the crankcase ventelation system on the 2L engine. But imho they missed. I've also read that the fumes from all that oil setting in that hose can contaminate the mas ruin it.
What I did was remove the hose from the breather near the oil pan and plug that off. Then tossed vw's over priced pos pcv valve. Bought a gromet and standard pcv for the outlet on the valve cover. Used a rubber 90 degree elbow and plastic barbed connecter to connect pcv to inlet hose where the old pcv plugged in. And there you have it, a much cleaner way to vent the engine crank case.
If you think about it, tt sells a kit to block off that breather when swapping an ABA into an earlier A2 so that you can use your original head and emission system. All that is needed is the outlet in the valve cover. It works for me but "your milage mat differ".

Ok... just finished working on my car and here's what I found. First of all, when I looked at the intake tube, I found that it was half hanging off of the throttle body. I have NO clue how it got like this ... I feel like such a bad parent!
Anyway, I cleaned out the intake tube (there was some oil, but not much) and cleaned out what I could reach in the throttle body w/ some carb cleaner. I then took the air box out and removed the "cold-air" pipe that goes from behind the headlight to the airbox. I cleaned out the screen in the "cold-air" pipe (it was pretty gunked up), and reinstalled the pipe. I also took the snorkel out of the airbox when I put everything back together.
When I took the car out for a joyride, I still noticed some hesitiation, however there seems to be less than before. The hesitiation happens mostly in 1st gear right up until 1900 RPM's. Once I get past 1900, the car takes off like a bat out of hell (for a 2.0, of course). Definately a noticable difference.
