Hello Everyone,
I am sort of new to VW, but VW's were in my family for generations. As of now, my mom drives a 2000 passat which is treating her well. I am close to getting my liscence, and a car. My question is, how reliable are mk3 (because those are the only ones I could probably afford), how costly are they to own, and how safe are they. Also, I live in California
Thank you.

and if you can get a vr, otherwise you'll be modding your 2 liter to make it faster, and realize you shoulda saved for the vr

Also, can someone tell me how expensive vw's are? the mk3s i mean. How much is insurance. I heard from my friend that his dads 93 passat had lots of troubles and it was costly. Since I am looking for a first car, I want something reliable, and something that I can make look cool. Anyways, other cars I am thinking about are honda civic, saab. Also, can somebody explain the trims in mk3? whats a vr?
I am totaly noob to vw's so any help is appreciated

Wow, i have the exact same story, bought my Jetta in August with 116K, now i'm pushing 125K. Glad to hear yours is going strong too. Who needs a fast car, its all about improving on what you started with. Besides, less tickets means more money for the car!

somewhat reliable...they like to be modded so it breaks it's own parts so you can go out & but better ones

So are you saying years 98 an less aren't reliable? Cause I am looking for a nice, cool looking, somewhat fast car, and most of all reliability. again, whats a VR?

and you would know cuz you have seen it!!!!! gross anyways i would get a vr if i was you but learn how to drive 1st. i think vr's are better because if you have a car with more power the more it seems like your going fast. 2.0's you have to drive hard to seem like your going fast. it will save on wear and tear

Thanks for your replies guys. Also, I looked in some other vw forums, and it seems everyone is just asking how to fix their vdub. Lol. Are older vw's so bad in reliability?

Re: (Camber)

not at all, its just that people are
A) tools and do stuff to break their cars
B) cars break from wear and tear over time
C) they want to know how to do something for a mod

Yeah, but notice most of the people who are asking how to fix something on their cars are doing performance mods. People on the Vortex also seem to forget that not everyone buys a VW to modify.
I have a stock 1998 2.0 & have had hardly any problems...with 71k and daily driven. My VW has been super reliable & not to mention is the funnest car to drive.
Safety wise, I can't help you there. I rear ended someone while rolling in neutral and was surprised how my front end crunched. Looked like I was involved with something a lot worse than what happened.
Some thing to consider:
a.) young driver = high insurance. That's just how it's going to be for the first few years. No way around that.
b.) If you go with the VR6, insurance will be even higher
c.) the gas prices are pretty ridiculous. VR6 guzzles gas while the 2.0 sips it

Either way, about your other suggestions are good cars too. You can drive Honda's into the ground, they hold up pretty well, and Saabs are pretty reliable as well. Best of luck! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

i have had my 97 since 37k, now has 107k. really no problems. had to replace the trans once because of a failed trans cooler but thats preatty munch it. as long as your "johny on the spot" with the manintenance, you shouldnt have much to worry about. just remember tha as cars get older things tend to ware and break thats just cars, no matter who makes them. the vw dealer i work at is close to a honda dealer and they have more work half the time then i do, and its nit just maintenance either
