Im currently working on fixing the hellish exhaust leak. It's right where the mid pipe meets the Cat. So, I was wondering, (probabyla real dumb question), but, is there a safe way to weld the exhasut with a mig welder? Or anyother good way to fix this leak. Thanks

You can weld on the car with a mig welder but you will want to unhook the battery and depending on what year car you have you probably will want to take the ecu out of the car. Electrical stuff doesn't like that many amps

Since you have an 85, you dont really have an ECU... granted there is a massive IC under the raintray, but welding the muffler wont hurt it.
Heres the $10, 30 minute fix..
-go to hardware store and buy four hose clamps ($4)...
-then go to auto part store and get hi temp exaust putty ($6)
-drink a beer
-cut the top and bottom off the can, then cut a slit down the side
-cover cracked section of exaust in putty.. as well as inside of can..
-wrap can around exaust
-tighten the hose clamps around can
-clean off excess putty
This is one of the most fun repairs you can do, especially if you have multiple cracks in your exaust

HAHAHA very nice. i had the same problem with my car, but you see, the previous owner was nice enough to fix it. he fixed it by welding the whole damn exhaust together and doing without the obligatory flanges. if you have any intention of getting an aftermarket exhaust (TT, etc.) do it now and save yourself grief down the road.

Two things:
Lyledriver: The leak is right where the cat meets the midpipe (If thats what its called). Will the putty still work there? becasue I know there is a little more heat in that area than at the ending pipe.
3wheelGTi: If I had the $$$ to buy a nice exhaust, I wouldn have posted this topic, but thanks anyways!
Thanks, Guys!

Disconnect the battery, remove the ECU under the raintray (or unplug it).
Clamp the ground somewhere close to the weld..a few feet away maybe..and go to town on it.
I was thinking the same thing about that exhaust fix..the high heat might oxidize the aluminum, right? Kinda like taking a can to a torch..it gets all brittle and turns to an ashy like substance..
