LOL,
Once, when I was a kid, we were on our way back from Palm Springs to 29 Palms when the throttle cable on our 74 VW Camper broke. So, I had to hang my 10 year old ass into the engine bay to run the throttle while my dad told yelled "MORE GAS!" or "LESS GAS!".

I was horrified and that fact that I am so obsessed with VWs is kinda freaky. Or is it?
oh well,
Later,

It COULD be your shift linkage is not adjusted correctly. But if you had to hold it in gear with your foot, you probably roached your tranny. The gear oil probably ran low, which casues it to jump out of 5th (and do lots of nasty things to the other gears). You can refill it, but it'll blow soon. Start looking around for a replacement so you're prepared when it happens.
Good luck!
