So We got snow today, Lots of snow and Ive never driven the jetta in snow before, it really wasn't fun. 1st of all the ASR is really useless in snow, i was driving up a hill and i wanted to try out the ASR and i figured out half the way up that I wasnt going to make it so i just rolled back down while some random other cars speed past me right up the hill. All the ASR did was not let my motor rev up, maybe thats what it is supposed to do but it still is useless. I turned off the ASR and gunned it and made it up the hill.
It really sucks having this nice new car and having a foot of snow and no Garage (im at college) Im so jelous of you guys that live in warm places and your cars are always clean and waxed (you all suck). So just wanted to know if anyone else had similar experences ??
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (Jett Wolf)
well, actually, the ASR can be turned off, FOR SNOW....
Read your manual.....
It's not for snow, if I remember correctly......
Plus you are probably on the stock CRAP YEAR tires....those things are garbage for the snow....
Plus, it's not a subby.....
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (Jett Wolf)
Yup, I live in Woodbury, just a few mins from Afton, I already slid off into a yard trying to go up hill, bent up a rim and almost popped a tire, damn ASR, I just turn it off whenever I get in my car, otherwise I never get anywhere, I love winter cause of the boarding, but I hate it in this car, even my rearwheel drive car was better than this thing, plus it had an excuse, rear wheel drive and all......would snow tires help??
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (what)
I drive my 98' Jetta K2 in the winter here in Toronto. it's lowered also... Don't have much problems with it and it doesn't have any ABS brakes to it also... Nice for playing around. Haven't driven my new GTI VR6 inthe snow yet since I got it few weeks ago. Snow should be coming here in around late Dec.

Yeah, I don't like winter at all... however, last winter was my first with my car and I can say that it actually drove great in the snow... better than any of the fwd cars i've had in the past. But then again, maybe I was a bit more careful. it being new and all. but what counts is that I made it through the season without incident. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
If it snows like it did last year I'll be the one plowing the street...
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (vdub07)
I love my 98' GTI 2.OH in the snow. I've got it lowered & all, used to have stock rubber on it & it was still great.
I'm Picking up my new 1.8T tonight and the first thing that went through my head when i felt the tug of that engine in the test drive was "Oh damm.....gonna need snow tires". Just too much oomf to really keep total control. I'll probably get used to it though. (I hope)
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (Bjaardker)
well, i'll contradict most posts on this thread so far. i L O V E my dub in the snow. the more the better. ASR in the snow works great, but obviously, it's designed to apply brakes, etc. to stop the engine from revving and wheels spinning, so going up a steep slope won't happen w/ASR on.
anyway, this is my second winter with the golf. took it out boarding monday. the transcan was sketchy at best (til i got to the mountains), but the dub performed very well. it's a solid car.
but do you think they could sprinkle some more gravel all over the roads!?!?

Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (Fly952.0)
I dont get it -- never had a problem like your saying with ASR and the snow (even with my 17s...)
Sounds like you guys need to learn how to drive in the snow -- and its not by flooring the car either
Re: Hmm.... Jetta in the snow, so this is what happened (Boostin20v)
Normal Driving in Snow - ASR On.
Stuck in Snow / Steep Incline - ASR Off.
Simple as that. Even the manual says that. Also what I've gathered from the countless posts about this topic in the past weeks.

NOw you have to understand guys, I went form a 99 Jeep wrangler sport to a 1.8 Jetta,, this post is pretty old as you can see by the orignal date (it was when we had our first snow) since then ive kinda figured out how to drive the 1.8 in the snow. I've had the best luck wiht the ASR off, but thats just me. I can see how it works well in some conditions but when i wrote this i got stuck in like 2 inches of snow,, Ive came to the conclusion that it isn't too bad in the snow http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I'll have to agree with this too. I love my ASR in the snow. If you're not flooring it, it works great. I drove home last year in about 4 inches of unplowed highway for 2 or 3 miles and I was completely amazed at how well it worked. This is car is definitely WAY better than my previous FWD cars.

Just chiming in also...
First snowfall last year, like I always do, I headed for the open parking lot to check out the winter driving skills. That was the first time driving my Jetta in the snow, and I loved it. I actually was trying to make the thing lose control and it was soo hard to do. I leave ASR on unless on something real steep. Get on an open side road, crank the wheel and gun it, it just won't let you spin out with ASR on. Bout the only to spin this car is the magic emerg brake
