I'm removing my stock exhaust tommorrow on my GLi, and while I'm down there I was wondering what's involved in
hollowing my cat?(time, difficulty?) What are the pro's and con's?
btw: I don't have emissions where I live http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Thanks, Will

Re: hollowing out cat? (dubwerkz)

I don't know what kind of HP gains you'd get, but people claim you won't gain anything.
I previously had my cat hollowed out (don't know how to do it though), but I have since had to put one back on, and I definately noticed a loss of top end power. It seems that the car doesn't quite "breathe" as well at high RPM's anymore.
to all those that say this doesn't give you any power then why don't race cars have cats?

what year is it....if if it is a newer one, keep the cat in tact for inspection purposes , take it out and get them to put in a straight pipe. thats what I got on mine, it makes it alot louder, you must know this.then again so will an exhaust. All it does is add loudness, I didn't notice too much of any power increase, by getting rid of some back pressure but go for it man. No Bad in it,except for O2 emmisions (I think)

I did it on my car. If you do this you need to put a straight pipe in its place. If you don't this will cause a slow spot in the exhaust exiting the car and can hurt performance. I have yet to do this on my car. I don't notice any change in hp at all but if I get around to putting a pipe in there I might get about 2 hp. It is not hard to hollow out. Mine was in perfect shape so I had to take a drill bit and drill and bore some holes and then I just smashed it up with a crow bar. Its pretty tuff stuff. Don't breath in the crap the comes out it will screw you up. Overall I don't think you will gain more than a couple of hp. Oh be warned that on mine at least it makes a weird sound when the exhaust goes thru it. It sounds like preignition or pinging. It is now very hard to tell when my car is pinging or if it is just the exhaust. Well there it is do it if you want I am sure you will get a bunch of people telling you not to. Personally I don't care.

TT cat-less downpipe
somewhere sells a test pipe for ~$23, I think it was rapid or GPR. You could make one yourself if you found a piece of the right size exhaust pipe and a scrap of metal to put together some sort of flange.
