Holy %#*^!! Ford will add Tesla plug to its electric vehicles starting in 2025

Well, I didn’t see that coming…

Starting early next year, Ford EV customers will have access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, in addition to the over 10,000 DC fast-chargers that are already part of the BlueOval Charge Network. This will give Ford EV customers unprecedented access to fast-charging.

In 2025, Ford will offer next-generation electric vehicles with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector built-in, eliminating the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers.

“This is great news for our customers who will have unprecedented access to the largest network of fast-chargers in the U.S. and Canada with 12,000+ Tesla Superchargers plus 10,000+ fast-chargers already in the BlueOval Charge Network. Widespread access to fast-charging is absolutely vital to our growth as an EV brand, and this breakthrough agreement comes as we are ramping up production of our popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and preparing to launch a series of next-generation EVs starting in 2025.”

Insane. I just read it as well!

Looks like full access to the entire network. Not just ones that have been converted to non-Tesla charging.

I assume this will incorporate the same plug and charge capability a native Tesla would have as well. Wow.

I wasn't expecting an OEM to score an own goal but never count Ford out is what I learned. 🤣

Yup, same plug and everything. Looks like the first step is to include a CCS to Tesla adapter with all current EVs going forward. Then all-new models coming in 2025 will have a native Tesla port, negating the need for an adapter.

This is yuuuuge

Indeed it is. Tesla can produce SCs faster, cheaper, and more reliably than anybody else. One more major OEM and CCS is in trouble IMO.

On a side note, I thought that this news would send TSLA higher after hours, but it’s barely budged. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I also just checked. Most don’t realize that SC sales will probably end up making them a good chunk of their money in the next decade.
Isn't this a step backwards? I thought every other car company was on board with the same charger?

With how easy Superchargers are, Fords on my radar for future EVs.

Also wondering why I would want to use Tesla's absurdly expensive network, and why this isn't a step backwards. Perhaps someone will explain.

Well, this will turn everything into chaos. Can't imagine other Automakers will sit on this. EA just crapped it pants.

Doesn't say if they're keeping the regular connector too. I assume they are.

I think it's kind of like when iPods could charge off firewire or usb. The universal standard won, but the rollout was faster because more people bought ipods because they had the option.

That said, it does seem like a stupid risk to take.

Because Tesla has the most reliable charging network in the U.S. with the highest satisfaction in actual desirable locations (proximity to retail, restaurants).

You always know what chargers are available, they almost always works, and all of the available chargers charge at the same rate. No pulling into a station to find that only one or two are 350kw and all the rest are 150kw or lower.

How will they implement the change in 2025, will their cars have two ports? Or will it just have NACS and they will sell an adapter to charge at CCS stations?

Right, but you pay a price premium for that.

Are future Fords getting locked into an overpriced charging network?

If not, carry on.

If so, why would you want that?
Whats the net step going to be, model collaborations?

Is it more expensive than lets say Electrify America? Around here they are cheaper. $0.40 vs $0.48. Note that supercharging should not be seen as the equivalent as getting fuel. Charge at home for cheaper

Even if they are locked in, I doubt people are going to bitch about the price difference for better reliability and accessibility. Most EV drivers charge at home anyway versus at a public charger.

I know I don’t represent everyone, but for the past year, only 15% of my charging was done at a Supercharger. The rest was at home or at my in-laws’ beach house.

Does it matter if it's more expensive or not than EA? The fact that you know it'll work when you show up alone is worth it over EA or EVgo.
