Homelink issues (no flashing lights)

Hey,
I am a brand new owner of a 2004 Phaeton V8, fully loaded. First, I would like to thank you all for your valuable contributions to this forum, as the support provided here was one of the major factors influencing my buying decision. Anyways, I am having a problem programming my homelink system, and I have already read every single thread on the forums about it, read the relevant pages of the manual, and even referenced the homelink website to no avail.
Anyways, the problem is this: When I hold down the 1 & 3 buttons for any period of time, nothing happens. I have held it down for 20 seconds, 40 seconds, 2 minutes, 2 hours (not really)... nothing makes a difference. I was originally wondering if perhaps I did not have a homelink system or maybe there was some kind of problem with it, but I would first like to post here to see if anyone else has had these issues, as the nearest Phaeton-certified dealership is a 2 hour drive. I have also tried the single button programming method. No matter what I do, those lights will not light up (or if I have my headlights turned on, they will not blink).
Thanks for your help!

Forget about the step you are doing and go to this step
Position the end of your hand-held transmitter 1 to 3 inches away from the
Homelink buttons while keeping the indicator light in view.
Simultaneously press and hold both the Homelink® and hand-held transmitter button.
Do not release the buttons until the indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly after Homelink successfully receives the frequency signal from the hand-held transmitter. Release both buttons.
Press and hold the just-trained Homelink button and observe the indicator light. If the indicator light stays on constantly, programming is complete and your device should activate when the Homelink button is pressed and released.

Re: (GripperDon)

Firstly, thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, I have likewise had no luck with this method. I have tried two different transmitters that go to two different doors (both transmitters work, and neither door is rolling code, as I have used both with another Homelink in another car). I have tried pointing at the rear view mirror fixture, and at the buttons themselves, but I can never get them to flash... no matter what. Is there any way that perhaps the homelink was coded out? Or perhaps a fuse controlling its function is blown? Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Also, is it possible this is a Canadian-spec Phaeton? I know their garage doors work differently. Although I bought this car from Georgia, you never know!

Re: (Apple_Eater)

Ok it's been a while but try this.
Helpful to have two people.
Hopefully your garage door opener (the unit attached to the door) has a "learn button." Press the learn button, briefly on the unit, it should flash the lights,(on the opener), then have the person sitting in the car press the #1 button or what ever button, and hold it until the garage unit flashes. If that doesn't work. Press and hold the learn button on the unit. That should clear all old codes. Now nothing will work now. Then press the learn button, briefly and have the person in the car press and hold button #1 button or what ever until the lights flash on the garage door unit. God willing that should do it. Clear as mud right.

Now you may need to reprogram all other openers

Re: (W126C)

Unfortunately my opener is a bit older and lacks the "learn" button. I think that is only for rolling code openers. I currently have *nothing* programmed, and no matter which buttons I push for whatever amount of time in any combination, the lights don't do _anything_. I have seen some topics about retrofitting a homelink, does that mean that not all cars have them?

Re: (GripperDon)

Damon,
First off, welcome to the Forum. You'll find a wealth of information here -- I encourage you to take the time & peruse, in particular, the third post for "Questions New Phaeton Owners Have Asked".
As for your concern, Homelink's website has the clearest and most concise set of directions for programming I've ever seen. As Homelink's operation is 100% the same, regardless of application, you can feel comfortable following them on the Phaeton. I see you've already been there, so we can rule that out.
Keep in mind that, by flashing lights, they are referring to the illumination of the numerals themselves -- something a little different than other Homelinks which typically have a separate LED to indicate operation. So, if you're pressing the button in the middle, you're essentially covering the light you're looking for with your finger.

Re: (GripperDon)

Thanks for the tip, but I can not get the actual buttons to flash either. The only way I even get them to illuminate is by turning my lights on, which illuminates everything else in the car as well

. Maybe if I just flashed my lights on and off slowly and then quickly homelink would be flashing the correct way?
Image
. At this point I am considering the 2+ hr drive to my dealership just to replace the homelink part... anyone else have ideas?

Is there some way to "initialize" the homelink feature after a dead battery like so many of the other features must be? I did have the car shipped to me on a flatbed truck, and while the dealer *said* they put it in transport mode, I'm not sure if I believe them. Perhaps the homelink needs to be woken back up? Just an idea.

Re: (Apple_Eater)

I had this same problem with my car. I went through EVERTHING just as you describe, and followed ALL the advice that I received. I gave up and just kept a transmitter in my car. About six months later I decided to give it another try. I'm trying to remember exactly what I did to finally get the buttons to "flash". I think it was as simple as turning the ignition on first, then holding 1 & 3 down. I know this sounds too easy, but I'm pretty sure that was all I did differently. Now it works fine.

Re: (Stinky999)

Well, today I actually called the people at Homelink to make sure I wasn't making some kind of stupid error, and their expert (

) opinion is that my homelink is malfunctioning. I will ask the dealer to check it when I get my 40k service/inspection done in a few days. Until then I suppose the ugly brown boxes for my garage door will have to mar the essential beauty of my Phaeton by remaining clipped to the sun visor

I also removed the cover above the rear view mirror just to make sure I had a homelink, and thankfully I do. I suppose it is just malfunctioning, as the "experts" say.

I know it's a silly question, but you did have the key turned to the ON position. I have seen some HomeLink systems work without the key in the ON position. This is not the case with the Phaeton. I guess it could be a bad HomeLink system, I've just never seen one before.

Good luck.

Re: (GripperDon)

Heh, I wish that was it, would save me the $$$ of a trip to Dallas, but anyways. I have tried it with the car cranked at my office and my house. I have tried it with the car off at both places. I have tried it with the ignition on and the motor NOT running at both places. I have made a game of it, every time I return home, before I shut off the car, I hold down the 1 & 3 buttons for about a minute before going in, in hopes that something has changed. I just washed my car, so I'll go try holding them down again.
EDIT: I know my office doesn't have the garage door, I was just trying to get the things to blink. I'm not THAT

Re: Homelink issues (Apple_Eater)

Hi All:
I am late to this discussion (work has been pretty demanding this month), however, there are errors in the printed instructions in the Phaeton Owner Manual so far as describing where to hold an external garage door opener when programming the Phaeton built-in garage door opener.
Please see these posts for elaboration, pictures, and detailed instructions explaining how to get the job done:
Program the Homelink Garage Door Opener
