HOV Violation?

1122 Views 16 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  GTI dont know
Just picked up one of these yesterday on westbound 66. Started school, and a new schedule, that required driving home from DC at 6pm. Never knew ALL of 66 was HOV at that time.
Anyways, does anyone know if it is just a fine? Or are points added as well?

First one is just a fine and pretty cheap. It's when you get to the third one that sux: $500 and 3 points

rt 66 is HOV only inside the beltway during certain hours
however, outside the beltway, hov is only on the left most lane. if you need to get out of dc during hov hours, take rt 50... its just not worth getting the ticket

High Occupancy Vehicle. You can drive in designated lanes as long as you have the required amount of people in the car. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Good to know I won't get any points. I'm pretty sure I'm still on the verge of losing my license, and it would suck if a stupid thing like this put me over the edge.
Well, learned my lesson. I'd better become religious and repent cuz I'm sure to go to hell for this one

This event has made me think not only of how dangerous it was to drive in the HOV lane, and if not for the lucky interventions of the kind state trooper, the possible horrific consequences of those actions, but philosophize on the entire HOV concept as well:
So they close an entire highway to normal traffic for 3 hours in the morning one way, and 3 hours in the afternoon the other way. This, of course, is the promote carpooling. However, there are a good portion of people -- lets say 50% -- who refuse to carpool for various reasons. Most are probably like me -- they have such a varied schedule that is not 9-5 everyday that it would be impossible to coordinate. However, since 66 is closed for 3 hours to these people, they are forced to wait until after the restrictions, or leave before the restrictions take effect. This creates two alternate pockets of time where the roads carry a disproportionately large load.
I noticed last night that traffic was unusually thin. And I know for a fact that at the surrounding times of 3pm and 7pm it is literally stopped. So if it was allowed to move at all times, wouldn't the traffic spread out a bit allowing a constant, albeit slow, rate of movement?
But hey, those traffic engineers make the big bucks for some reason, right? And we have the best in Virginia -- they concocted the mixing bowl project!!

Re: HOV Violation? ([email protected])

actually they dont make that much money. the construction workers probably make as much. yeah, the mixing bowl even today should handle the traffic load projected for 5 years. before it would need more. But thats oke, because everthing feeding it is screwed up and hte bridge that will be 10 years behind schedule is also too small to be opened in 10 years given the current traffic growth.
Personally I would love to reduce the traffic crossing state lines, but funny part is 90% of the work is still in NoVA and MD you are lucky to find an opening.
Re: HOV Violation? (jamesb)

I try to take the metro as much as possible, but since I only spend about 4-5 hours in DC a day, I find the time spent riding the metro to be too time consuming. And those hours don't facilitate carpooling.
Sigh, the life of an intern/student. The law doesn't seem to look too kindly on us (between parking tickets and this).

steve -
while your observations are correct, it is my theory that the HOV restrictions on I-66 inside the beltway are more to spare Constitution Avenue some traffic during rush hour rather than 66 being super-crowded.

p.s. sorry I missed you guys at the Dominion Brewfest last Saturday, moving/unloading took longer than I hoped & by the time I was done it was time to meet my parents for dinner, so no brewfest for me .

Glad I don't live in NoVA anymore....
doesn't VA give you reimbursement checks for taking public transportation?
My dad does taking the Metro from Manassas Park to Crystal City, something like $60 a month.
DoD reimburses you up to $100 a month (which is nice...)
