My wife just bought a new Jetta 2.5 with the 17's. We were driving at 80, and the tire ripped off from the rim! We pulled over, and the inside of the tire was dust! No really I mean it turned to dust. I was a perfect tear about 1inch all the way around. Has any body heard of this happeing before?

I'd take some pics of what is left of the tire and send them to the manufacturer. Heck, take the tire back to the VW dealer and demand a new set.

Seriously, you should report this to VW, the tire manufacturer, and to NHTSA (the government agency) ASAP.
Perhaps this was an isolated incident, or you ran over a sharp object on the road, but it is important enough to report in case it is a defect in either the car or the tire. If so, this could be recall material and the sooner everyone is aware of the issue the sooner they could look into it.

The tire was blown apart from something on the road as I was told. I have had nails in my tires before, but that didn't cause the tire to shread apart. I'l post pics soon, and I will talk to some people at Cont.

But yes we are ok, and thats all that matters to me.
