If you are going to go with a cheap alternative to a new suspension then cut off two coils. I did it on my jetta with no negative effects for a year. Finally after a year my rear shocks blew (this was probably due to the 350lb cousin of my brother's fiance in my back seat for an hour). Don't cut more then two coils though.
Clamps are defenately a bad idea.

agh, don't sacrifice handling for looks... Especially if you're just keeping the stock suspension... Just keep it like it is, save up some money, and buy lowering springs. Cutting the springs is bad because you lose some of your travel, and will just end up with a mushy boat kind of ride. I imagine that clamping would do the same, although I don't really know how one would go about this.
