How can I make a backyard ice rink?

876 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Youngdubber4
I'm thinking about making a 40x20foot rink in my backyard..maybe bigger but I don't have alot of money. I found a 20x24foot tarp at canadian tire for 39buck with tax. I have a 10x8 plastic sheet thing so I can use that. Anyone have an idea on how to cover the rest?

My next door neighbor actually had his back yard ripped up in the fall. He installed pipes and boards for his kids to play hockey all winter.

Bob,
Right on, we're doing the same thing over here http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif if it's not in the lease the landlord must be OK with it, right?
We started the project on Sunday. 3 guys, we evened out a 20 by 30 area in our backyard. We just stamped it down with our feet, and layered snow along the low spots till it was flat.
Take a sprayer hose, and douse the snow one night evenly so it turns to ice. Use a shovel the following day to even it out.
Then it's a matter of flooding it...don't leave the hose going in one place because it'll eat through. Keep moving it, we're expecting this thing to be skatable tomorrow. Good luck, post some pics when you've acheived perfection http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
[edit] we didn't use house wrap at all, just good ol' snow. House wrap is a good idea if you can afford it, which we can't...it'll keep the water in during a thaw

One of the guys here at work used to do this in his backyard for his kids. Apparently, there is a 'kit' you can buy at Canadian tire to do this but you can do it yourself, pretty much as Brad just explained.
Of course, I can just go skate on the pond behind my house if I really wanted to go skating outdoors

There's a home made ice rink kit you can buy. Couple of guys from Ottawa started the company and they've perfected it to the point where it's close to indoor rink texture. I can't remember the co. but do a search on google or something.
Cheers

I don't want to buy the kit because again...I'm broke....Also it's small and I want a 40x20foot rink..if not bigger. I told everyone in my family that can play hockey and they all said they are in. I thnk I'm going to try to push down an area and fill it with water and see if it will not soak in..just a test run..if not I'm buying a cheap cheap tarp.
