how can you tell if your maf is bad

just what the topic says, how can you tell if the maf went bad on a jetta iv

Log airflow at full throttle. Should be 165-175 g/s peak in a chipped AWW. Or, disconnect the MAF and see if it runs better.

How exact are those numbers? I had a peak of 160g/s on a run last night.

Those numbers are what your engine uses to measure airflow, so they should be accurate ... unless the MAF is dirty/failing. 160 isn't too bad.

Does anyone have links to an old topic that goes over how to clean the maf? I'd search for it, but...
BTW, lately power has been surging (falls on it's face, then tries again, then falls on it's face again) in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears 5500rpm and up. Do these sound like symtoms of a maf gone bad, or do I just need a new air filter

thanks for your help guys, i will disconnect it tonight to see if my car runs better
