Turbo motor, forged pistons, HD valve springs, yada yada...
I know I should probably keep the boost at 0psi until its broken in, but what method of break in should I use?
I've heard of heat cycles, I've been told to keep it under 2,000rpm with mild load for 20 mins, and I've also been told to beat the balls off it after a 5 min easy run. Someone also told me NOT to let it idle... ANY THOUGHTS?!?!?

Any help is appreciated!

Re: How do I break it in? (vdubturbo)

with forged pistons, i think you have to break those in for a couple thousand miles so that they seat properly. Thats what a friend of mne had to do with his G60 motor...
It went something like this:
1st 1000 miles no higher than 3000
2nd 1000 miles, no higher than 3500
3rd 1000 miles, no higher than 4000
etc...
also, i heard not to use synthetic oil during the break in period, changing the oil after every 1000 miles...he has to let it warm up completely each time, before he drives it, too..

my brother got his motor blueprinted/balanced and his mechanic told him not to rev it obove 3500 for the first and second oil change. So pretty much he said not to rev it above 3500 for the first 1K miles. After that it doesnt matter. Although he didnt have forged pistons.

Don't use synthetic oil.
Don't leave it idling.
No full throttle (only 1/2) or extra weight for 500 miles.
Don't stay at a constant engine speed.
Try to runin in a couple of days, one short trip and one long.
Avoid starting the engine, especially cold.
Change the oil, use semi syth oil.
After 500 mile give it full throttle and reves in 2nd and 3rd once.
Now drive normally for 500 miles giving full throttle and revs every 100miles.
At 1000 miles change the oil to fully syth racing oil.
Switch on boost.
Now drive as fast as you dare, and see if it can handle the boost.

Re: How do I break it in? (vdubturbo)

given the assumption that you have put together everything properly with painstaking care and patience(i have no doubt you have) your break in should be fairly short and easy.
Prime the motor before you start it, just crank it over with the coil wire off until about 10 cranks AFTER the oil light goes out...
Start the motor and let it run for fifteen minutes around 1500 to 2000 rpms.
Shut the motor down and let it cool for an hour.
Start it up again, this time hold revs around 2500 while it warms up.
CHANGE OIL (best bet, use cheap but heavy dino oil)
Run the car gently for a week or two, it should get smoother every drive as the rings seat themselves.
Change the oil again, check for bearing material, put whatever oil you want back in, and run er till she blows, if it is going to break, it will break...might as well get it over with.
Myself and others have used a virtually identical procedure to break in late model stock car motors, his 650hp mustang motor, and one extremely fast camaro small block, with no problems. have fun!
