How do i get the crank pulley off???

1356 Views 24 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  happiby
I know there is a special vw tool i could get. I was wondering if there was a nother way. I have the right size socket to get it off....its just the crank will just spin. I was thinking of bolting up the flywheel and having my buddy hold it as i try to get it off. Any advice.

I have seen this done, but I don't condone it nor do I accept any responsibilty if you kill yourself or anybody else whilst doing it.
Get the car up ont stands. Put an impact socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley hex head and put a 'big' length of pipe over the breaker bar and wedge it against the floor (in front of the car).
Get it in the car and 'flick' the starter motor for a split secondand I mean a split second, as quick as you can do it, DO NOT LET IT RUN!!!. This should be enough to crack it loose.
Not a totally safe method, but it works if you are desperate and don't have an impact wrench.
Dont' flmae me for saying this, it's a last resort only.

That sounds crazy....i guess i should of said the motor is bare and on a engine stand.

You should bolt on the flywheel or stick a crow bar in between the spokes and use the baddest air gun on it. It took me 15 striaght minutes on one of my spare blocks.

No air tools yet
. Just good ol elbow grease. This is my first engine project.

You have no chance of getting it off, sorry.

Hehe thats what i thought. I dont need to take off i just wanted something else to do. I already stripped everything else out of it. If i get that vw tool is it possible to get it off by hand.
What about if i use this for torque...its how i got the head bolts off.

Rent a 175cfm compressor and a 1/2 inch impact wrench
J/K but go rent what you need.

Yup it was a pogo stick.
O_loung1 - I will be using this block for a built turbo motor.

I went to the dealership yesterday to get the tool but service was closed. How much do these usually run, and is there a place online i could order it from.

OK for those who are trying to get it off with the engine still in the car, I don't think you need to resort to this. Just put it in gear (engine off!) and have someone step on the brake. I got it off no problem with just a large torque wrench. The only pulley that needed the impact of an air gun was the alternator because there was no way to hold it still (tension of the belt is not enough).

the tool retails around 200 bucks
Re: How do i get the crank pulley off??? (Bundaho)

Bundaho - Take the pan off the motor and stick a piece of wood in between the block and the crankshaft throw, with the motor on the ground and on it's side (Towards the direction you turn the bolt to loosen it). Use a 1/2" torque wrench (Twist Grip Type Torque Wrench) and place it, some what horizontal to the floor, and stand on the end of the torque wrench and bounce up and down a few times and the bolt will come loose. Good luck

Aren't you not supposed to use a torque wrench to loosen bolts, only tighten them? Seems like a quick way to screw up the calibration on the wrench. Why not use a big, cheap breaker bar instead?

Re: How do i get the crank pulley off??? (VgRt6)

VgRt6 - A Torque wrench when set in the lowest Torque setting (Twist Grip Type Torque Wrench), once it is past the Torque setting, it is basically a standard ratchet wrench, and that goes for tightening and loosening functions. I agree that if the Torque wrench were a Torsion Bar type that you would damage the torque calibration of the Torque Wrench. Thank you for bringing this up, I should have qualified what type of Torque Wrench I use.

Thanks for the clarification, but I still prefer to use a $10 breaker bar. There's something about cranking down on the end of an expensive clicker-type torque wrench that makes me nervous. Why take the chance?
