How do I know if my cam timing is off?

1641 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  The DarkSide
My car is dies after 5k and has a really rough idle when up to normal running temp.....Ive gotten different replies, but the one that fits the most is the cam timing issue, because the car (to my knowledge) didnt have the 5k rpm problem until its last visit to the shop (in which the head had to be removed)....What are the symptoms of a badly timed car? Thanx!!

Yup, could be. Have to pull the valve cover to be sure.

Now... I am only speaking from what I have heard, but the VR6 won't run at all if the timing is off one tooth... and since there is nothing in between, if your car IS running, it may be something else.

Is this true????? I was kinda hoping it was the cam timing.......Anybody know different?
Re: How do I know if my cam timing is off? (rvv2002)

why was the head removed in the first place?
Re: How do I know if my cam timing is off? (jcorallo)

timing chain broke
Re: How do I know if my cam timing is off? (rvv2002)

doh! did it damage valves and pistons? Maybe they screwed up putting the gasket and head back correct? Did they use new bolts?
I;ve heard that its possbile the engine will run missed timed.
Cheers,

it can definetly be the timing. The car will run if it is off.If it is off alot then the valves will bend on start up but it will run I've been through it.Now either your cams can be off by one tooth or they can look properly timed but in the wrong rotation.Since all engines are basically 4 strokes now you have to line up TDC by lining up the marks on your pressure plate to the marks on your bell housing.Once you do that the bottom end will be properly timed and the camshafts will have to be checked.Take off your valve cover and look at the the cams from the pass side.On the end of the the cams they have a straight cut line in them thats for the timming tool. What you need to do is look to see if the lines match up on both cams.It wont be perfect but it will be VERY close. If the lines line up and they are horizontal then the timing should be ok if not then they are off.Now the next check is hard to explain so if your going to do this yourself let me know and ill walk you through it.Hope this helps

Hey blackVR. Got a question.

Like an idiot i took off the tranny before i made sure it was TDC. I have everything lined up top. But please for the love of god tell me i dont need to put the tranny back on for this..
Any tips for changing the belt? Thanks in advance. -Mike

1 did u remove your cams or swap your cams for the timeing to be off.
2 have you done compresion test to make sure it not timeing related problem but a valve or engine related rough idle.
let me kknow hope this helps.

you dont need to put your tranny on.The lower timing chain sprocket has a notch cut out on the inside.Just put the car to TDC using the marks on the crankshaft pulley.Once you lined it up look at the lower gear if you see the notch then your timed if you cant then spin the pulley around 1 time and line it again the notch will then appear and your bottom end will be timed

Can you see the lower timing chain sprocket? As my gf's car sits right now. The cams are on, the chains are on, the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch are still on, and i have the sprocket cover off. I can see the chains going in....
Btw, you can set TDC by using the crank pulley? is there a mark on the crank pulley? on the side of the a/c compressor? THanks for the help. -Mike
