I have my '02 with 2k miles on it and it rarely goes over 3k rpms unless i'm passing up a 5-ton 18-wheeler that is tossing dirt/rocks on the freeways.
avg 45mpg 5-sp
I try to keep all shifts below 2400 rpms, I try to drive with a tad of spirit around corners and in twisties until the body roll, nose dives, and squats cause me to slow down for fear of a rollover. (seen an old Scirocco do a roll-over at an auto-cross)
On the other hand I had a '01 Golf TDI automatic and that one had a tranny problem with the shift points so it red-lined ALOT! Top speed was around 115 on the speedo, cruising on a beltway. Avg mileage was 36mpg; a lemon car that was traded in for a '02 Jetta wagon tdi before it hit 12k miles. Before the '01 Golf, we had a '00 Golf WVW and all shifts were below 3k rpms with the automatic, unles you floor it; mileage was avg 59mpg. (the '00 was a flood victom of Allison)

I got to show my parents this.
Dad = makes car make that "Need lower gear" noise
Mom = shifts at 2000 or less cept on hill's... same "need lower gear" noise
Me = 3000 or above...

Re: Is it Mine? (Driv'n EZ)

I give my TDI Beetle a mix of of low-rpm fuel-miser granny driving and hard driving
I'm sure once I chip it, install a short shifter, and stuff the Viper CAI under the hood this will change

Re: Is it Mine? (81GTIpickup)

yo,,read the tranny code,,if its a gti trans its 2H ,or 4K,,,its on the bottom of trans on bellhousing,there will be other numbers after the code,dont worry bout them,,its the code ya need,,plenty of sites have the breakdown on the code,will tell ya which ratios are in trans,,ive seen 2 sorta identical diesels 1 can be a total pig,and the other one can run cood,,depends on how good the pump is calibrated,and engine compression,,,get that code and see what ya got,,, http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
