How do you fix an idle screw that backs out when running?

I have to tape the screw to stop it from turning. Is there a o-ring or something that could be worn out? I think I need injector seals too. I can hear a loud sucking noise from around the 5th injector and that general area. I was going to order the o-rings and little plastic pieces and see if that helps. My vacuum hoses are all shot as well. How many feet of hose would I need to replace every worn out piece on the car(including the heating/cooling/vents inside)? I heard 6 ft. from someone, but I don't know if that's for all of the hoses or not. I've been slowly fixing this car over the last year. I keep finding more and more things wrong with it though. If only money grew on trees.
It's still a blast to drive. Thanks!

Yes, there is an o-ring in the TB. Easily replaced at any hardware store. Take the old one with you and get the same size. Not sure about vacuum lines though.

Get that white sealing tape and rap the screw with it. I dont remember what it is called, but it is very thin and should make it stop coming out. You can get it at any hardware store.

Yeah, that teflon sealing tape. Good stuff. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Go to a junkyard with a wrench and take one from a throttle body with a good looking O ring. I got mine brand new from a VW parts wrecker brand new.

I actally drilled a hole thru the head of my idle screw and safety wired it to another bolt to keep if from spinning.
A week later I bought a new idle screw from the dealer, it came with the o-ring, about $10 usd.

I have a funny story about this. My idle screw was giving me all kinds of grief while I was Ice racing last year. I'd finish a lap and the car would be idleing at 1700rpm. I couldn't get it to stay in. One of the senior members of the group said "I have an idea". He went over to is tow vehicle, opened the door, and took a tiny bit of the weather stripping glue off and said "try this". I put a little of the sticky stuff on the screw, put it back in, and the car ran great the rest of the day. Grassroots Motorsports at its finest! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I don't think I've ever fixed that screw the "right" way since then.

teflon tape

Only thing that sucks is that you can't adjust it by hand after you replace the o-ring.

I ran some loctite blue down a pin into the area where the screw threads.
Waited a couple of minutes and presto, no more auto adjusting idle.

Thanks for the help! How about the vacuum lines? Anyone?
Re: How do you fix an idle screw that backs out when running? (84RabbitMan)

Definitely use the O-Ring on the bypass idle adjuster. In racing due to vibration, I put a large vacuum cap plug over the adjuster housing, and if the screw backs out, then the vacuum plug retains it....better than looking for another adjuster. Regards, WWR.

Cool idea w/ the cap Ryan! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I use a little safety wire on mine.
