In my A2 GTI, the front pistons just pull out. Simple cylinder/0-ring combo. They don't twist out like the rear pistons.
I think I used a big pliers to help pull them out. Make sure you don't grab on the sealing surface though!!!

If you are careful you can use compressed air. A couple of things to remember though, that piston cwill come out in a hurry if you blast the air into the cailiper, use a rag and a regulator on the air pressure or get your hands outa' the way!! It works way better than pulling it out, by using the air the piston is driven out the way it was intended to go. If you pull on it, it is being forced from the inside of the piston. My 2cents anyway. Good luck

I agree with you, it has to be removed by slowly applying compressed air into the caliper .. you shouldnt remove the piston by hand..

I've even used a bicycle pump to get pistons out. Just put a little block of wood to catch it so you don't mar the piston top when it pops out of the seal. Be carefull to not scratch the seal groove when removing old seal ring!
Re: How do you remove/ front brake piston? (spitpilot)

I did this by mistake when trying to figure out why my rear calipers wouldn't compress (they were bending a c-clamp because that damn tool from potterman was backordered)
can i assume that after I drain all the break fluid and screw them back together that they will a) be ok and b) compress all the way to allow me to install my rear pads?
thanks,
justin
