Re: How do you tell if your CV joint is shot? (FriendlyGhost)

It might be the ball joint, you can check this by lifting the front wheels up and check for "play" by pulling and pushing on the control arm. I would do side to side and up and down on both.
I think the only way to check for wear on the inner and outer cv joints is to disassemble them and inspect. So if it's not the ball joint and you still suspect the cv joint then you may as well have them serviced or changed.

Is the out CV boot torn (grease leaking out)? If so then chances are that CV is shot or will be in the near future. It makes a clunking noise when the wheels are turned. You may be able to salvage them but if you are unsure then replace them.

If the axle is removed, hold the axle and try rotating the CV joint forward or backward. There shouldn't be any play at all. Try rotating it in every direction also and to see if there is play before it actually locks and starts to turn.
My rabbit had a similar problem, and it ended up being the wheel bearings. When I would jack up the car and turn the wheel, you could hear a slight grinding noise. But the bad bearing caused a constant grinding noise while driving, which doesn't sound like your situation.

doesn't sound like cv joint but inspecting doesn't hurt. if u can't find the problem and it doesn't get worse then relax. if it does get worse then it will be easier to find.
just changed the cv joint with axle recently. the passenger wheel would start thumping when i accelerated hard in a straight line (no turns). after change out no more thumping. wonder when the other side will go out now.
