yea it was a bad storm last night so i went home and when i got home the gas light went on, and its on the red lines.. how far can i go??? cause i live about 10 miles from a gas station..

Well it depends on the engine and your driving style. If you look in the owners manual it says something like this (dont go by these numbers because I am not sure of their accuracy) I believe that the gas tanks in our cars are 12.3 gallons with a 2.5 gallon reserve, in which case whatever you typically get to the gallon comes into play, in my VR6 i get about 22 miles to the gallon, so i would be able to drive 55 miles theoretically before i would be outta luck, hope this helps.

ive heard "usually" the gas light will come on around 2-3 gallons left.. so considering our cars get 30-35mpg on the freeway ur talking 60-100 miles.. if ur worried just drive easy.. have a cell phone.. and keep the rpms low
if ur seriously worried take a empty gas container with u.. cause alot of stations dont have any loaner... or dont sell them
if u got a fat friend bring him along... ya it will hurt the milage.. but ur gonna love that big pig when hes pushing ur car with ease

on a side note: don't wait until the tank reaches the reserve to get gas because tha gas at the bottom of the tank contains stuff (particles) that will mess up your injectors. yeah there's a filter and all but still, gas isn't 100% pure. best bet is to re-fill before it gets to red.

I have a 1.8T. It's a Golf, but, whatever, the weight difference isn't that much.
I average about 28 mpg. The light comes on when there are 1.9 gallons left. So, ~28 x 1.9 = 53.2 miles.
I routinely drive about 20 miles after my light comes on (I always wait for the light before I fill up, and my commute is very long, and I'm not going to get off the highway just to fill up).
In the 94 tanks of gas I have gone through while owning this car, I have never had a problem or run out of gas.

Good point, also keep in mind that our fuel pumps are cooled by the gas itself so when it's really low I'd guess they will run a lil hotter thus lowering their long term lifespan.

I can get about 40-50mi of driving after the light comes on. The reserve is 1.9gal so since I get about 30mpg, I conservatively estimate that I can get at least 40mi after the light goes on and as much as 50 or maybe 60 if I really push it.
I think it's a 14.5 gallon tank including reserve of 1.9 gallons. But check your manual.

My friend used to drive ALL OVER THE PLACE with his gas light on... then he paid the price.
His fuel filter got clogged, and his car stopped running.
They told him that running it on empty did some damage to either the filter, or the fuel pump. Can't remember which.

When the light goes on, drive to the nearest filling station and fill up the tank. Subtract the amount of fuel used to fill up from the fuel tank capacity to get the amount of fuel left before refueling. Multiply by your miles per gallon. Add any miles you drove to filling station to get the "range to dry" when the light goes on.

And sucking air from an empty tank will wear out your pump even faster than that.
