I can't seem to find any published 0-60 or quarter mile times for a 1998 GTI 2.0 manual. What is the concensus is for how fast/slow this car is? I've seen times (I can't remember where) from 8.5 to 10.5 for 0-60 but are those the numbers? What are the times for a 2.0 manual with K&N and a chip?
I am asking because I'm curious not for any nefarious plan. I hope that someone can answer and sate my curiousity. Thanks
Seth
Re: How fast is a stock 1998 GTI 2.0? (big bentley)
you can't tell anyone but the 2.0 is slower than a turtle flipped on it's back and been run over by 20 big-rigs over loaded with concrete. And I know for a fact cause I got one. They suck, we have to live with that. I'd kill to get a VR!!!

Actually I think your describing my old 89 Golf Diesel... something like 50 hp
now THAT was slow... my 2.0 Jetta is a rocket in comparison http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
VR is fast, but heavy as all hell... if you prefer the twisty bits to raw speed stick with you 2.0 and toss a turbo in!

actually the 1.6L naturally aspirated Bosch VE is 51 hp.
i had the turbo version in my jetta... 67hp.... 22.5:1 compression too!!!

Yup my roomie has a '91 TD Jetta, we raced a bit when I still had my Golf, he trounced me! Must have been funny to watch the two little diesels battle it out
He wants to do a TDI swap... now THAT would be a fast little diesel http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: How fast is a stock 1998 GTI 2.0? (LostBoyScout)
My buddy got a 2.0, we took it out to the strip a while back, 17+ seconds, with only filter.
Now, he has cams + gear, chip, exhaust, some other stuff, and it makes a hell of a difference! The funny thing is, he didn't spend that much money on it either. 2.0s are extremely cheap to soup up.

LOL!!!
Yes, my VR envy is getting bad. But what I really want is a 1.8T swap. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
As for the ad, I don't know what they look like in hte U.S. but up here in Canada, they're really starting a new trend and it works. They're selling more and more cars and if I'm not mistaken, they had the highest sale increase this year. Just so you know, Ford went down 4%!
vw motorsport has an a3 golf 4dr with a tdi making 225bhp and 345ft lbs of torque...
it runs closed curcuit tracks, like le mans....
they kick everyone's butt, and they never have to fuel up!!!
my next dub is going to have a 1.6L turbo intercooled making 200+ bhp.(probably a rabbit)
it's all in the fuel http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif (i knew i took diesel classes for a reason...
Re: How fast is a stock 1998 GTI 2.0? (VolkSchnell-GTI)
I posted the stock 2.0 numbers in the 2.0 forum awhile back, try doing a search.
FWIW, according to C&D a 2.0 will 'tow itself' to 60 mph in a Mk3 in about 9.2 secs stock with about a 17 sec. quarter mile. By way of comparison most MINIVANS are comparable in terms of acceleration and 1/4 mile times
Most people I've talked to say that with a K&N drop in, chip and exhaust your in the mid 16's quarter mile or ABOUT 8.5 secs 0-60.
Regardless of what it ACTUALLY is, with some mods a 2.0 can be a lot of fun to drive, and I don't care what anybody says, I still love the car and really enjoy driving it...which is all that should matter to anyone!
Re: How fast is a stock 1998 GTI 2.0? (Red Baron Golf)
Thanks Red Baron Golf!
I agree that its a fun car to drive despite its "lack-luster" stock performance. I had a Probe GT prior to my GTI and it felt slower than the GTI for some reason. I just like the feel of the GTI so much more, its very different than most other cars.

That has to be the funniest and most true thing I've seen on here in awhile.
I've driven a 2.slo jetta back in like 99 and it was OK. When I was searching for a car after my Ghetta this year, I was psyched to find a 95 GTI 2.0 for sale near me with exhaust, intake, etc. Probably the most depressing test drive ever.
Then I found my VR. I saw it, and it was like sex. I drove it, and it was like a menege et trois.
Sell your 2.0, or swap a 2.0 DOHC 16V & tranny in.
