for example they don't have that same close ratio gear box and they are almost 3000lbs. for a car that is considered a performance car. cause i mean they just keep getting heavier.

Re: how many people think the gti got worse after 92? (clickhappy)

yea i think VW messed up on there performance hatch btwn 92 and 99.5 then they came up with the 18T to even out for the added weight...the A2's are the ultimate VW car!!!

it depends on how you look at it. cars evolve, and as people want bigger and better, they'll grow, too. plus, added safety features add weight. did it get worse? maybe, from a fun, drivers car point of view... the mk2's are for sure more tossable and thrashy than their newer siblings. at the same time, there's only so many people like us that want thrashy, rough cars.
the gti is growing up, as all cars do. it's got cars to take it's place, though, they just don't sell them here
(lupo gti, seat leon cupra)

Re: how many people think the gti got worse after 92? (simongti)

the fastest VW's came from the factory in mk2 form (it's really true, think about it - corrado, golf limited, etc....)
does anyone remember if they still used the "Fahrfigneugen" (sp?) ad campaign once the mk3 came out?

I think they did at the very beginning in '94. Then they had that quasi-this car is for yuppies and makes you better by driving it ads. I have one of a '95 GLX, it's pretty funny when you look at the TOTAL lack of humor in it. I think the GTi is just evolving. A friend of mine has a '00 GLX, and yes it's a very nice car, but it's not nearly as fun as my '92. I guess it's all about evolution...
Re: how many people think the gti got worse after 92? (88Jetta)

Its true that the GTI has lost some of its sportiness. However, I think the new GTI is still an excellent car. Still better than many cars. I don't know why car and driver ranked the 180hp GTI 1.8t in thrid (last) place against the civic Si hatchback, and the ford focus svt!

What i want them to do is to bring the A2 back in the states the same way that you can get a A1 in the UK (built in south africa). The A1 was brought back to UK buyers last year, i don't know if it is still available.
What i want them to do here is: Limited quantities of A2 GTI 2-dr only, probably built in china, limited but still competitent saftey, corrado type of dash (current Chinese Jetta one), 1.8t as the only motor option, BBS, recaro, 4 wheel disc, underbody plate, maybe a syncro version? That would be dope, i could care less where the car is made as long as it is a A2. It needs to be light, and sportier suspension, stiff, low. Pop out rear glass stock? What do you think? What about power options? Mirrors, sunroof, windows, and all of that are nice, but they do add weight and $$. If they worked it right, they could make it really cheap. They would need to use more German made parts on it than current Chinese production does (some of the chinese stuff is junk), but i don't car that it is assembled there. And we do have normalized trading with china now.

Dunno about the honduh, but isn't the gti only rated at 150HP? SVT is 170, so even at 180 the gti is barely more than the ford.
Anyway, the GTI is also 100 lbs heavier than the SVT. GTI is 5sp manual, SVT is 6sp manual. Oh, and the SVT is like $3k cheaper. I like dubs, but they've lost a lot of ground.

i think vw needs to do something quick. and also get rid of that 8v engine and start making 16v's again.

yes i saw that bullsh1t. if you look, the gti beat the other cars in basically every category:
0-60:
ford-7.8
honda-8.0
vw-6.5
1/4 mile:
ford:[email protected]
honda:[email protected]
[email protected]
there's other specs where the GTI just raped the other cars. and c&d's main complaint was like, there was too much body roll or something. shut the fcuk up, the GTI is just better. quit being bitches and give volkswagen the recognition it deserves, straight up!!!

Re: how many people think the gti got worse after 92? (eastcoastdubs)

I actually agree with C&D -commpared to the Focus SVT the A4 GTI is a *little* soft around the edges. With a sport suspension (like the follow-up write-up with Neumann showed) the GTI would've been the hands-down favorite. Admittedly, the GTI's fit, finish, build quality, and overall quality "feel" trumps the other two, but do drive a Focus SVT and you'll be transported back to the heady days when the A1 GTI was King - that Focus is a RIOT to drive, next to it the STOCK GTI seems a bit too much a gentleman. I'm not a huge 1.8T fan from the drivability (fun-to-drive) side, prefer mine non-pressurized, but I agree that it has locomotives-worth of torque and is quite fast, but "fast" isn't all that counts in "fun". TEHO, however. I'm just disappointed that the Si did better than the GTI - that Si is ugly.

The GTI got worse after they stopped manufacturing them in Germany.
It's easy to "fix" what's wrong with the A4 GTIs suspension.

2L 16V GTI's were made in Mexico so I guess all those are crap too since they werent made in Germany?
My friend Rich owns this car

it's faster, handles better and stops just as well as mine, not to mention it's got a nice interior, power accessories and cruise control.
I'd trade if given the chance

Go drive a Focus SVT, you'd understand. Much more like a MkII than any MkIII or MkIV imported to the US.
The MkIII GTI 2.0 was essentially a GTI in badge and some trim only. Very little differentiated it from a stock GL performance wise. The stock MkIII GTI VR6 is heavy and ponderous. The MkIV 1.8T is a move in the right direction, but still retains many things aimed at comfort and isolation, such as the suspension bushings.
(edit: Matt--gezuvor is running TT wheels now? nice...)
