How many PSI can these things run?

Okay, so the general rule of thumb is that DOHC is ideal to turbocharge. We have SOHC. How many PSI do you turbo-junkies run? Is it safe to turbocharge our SOHC's? Do you use an aftermarket cam to compensate? I'm not too savvy on VW's, I just know general rules about cars, and want to know if I can sleep at night with a turbocharged SOHC.
BTW, I got my 2nd gear grind fixed at Holbert's VW/Audi/Porsche....She runs like a charm now. All under warranty, too.

Re: How many PSI can these things run? (Y2KJTA)

u can go 10psi with everything stock (compression, internals, etc...) pretty well...15psi...lower compression via copper head gasket or JE forged pistons, upgrade rods, cranks or whatever...i'm sure other guys in here knows the detail...but generally, these sohc's are pretty tough if not tougher then the dohc's...the cam don't matter cuz the only actuates the valves and has nothing to do with internal compression...however a moderately more radical then stock cam (260) helps the flows...but too radical of a cam will not work well with a turbo...the most common problem is fueling..running too lean with higher boost etc...
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (87GolfKart)

nope.
it all depends on your fueling methods, and your engine timing.
what the guy above said is not really true.

can u elaborate more on it then just one sentence? it's not totally based on fueling and timing...that's only part of it...look at the acura b18 engines...not really good for turbo cuz of higher compression...however, the b16's are better for turbo...porsche's 911 turbo is an SOHC...nothing wrong with sohc...as long as the internal is strong enough to handle to extra boost.
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (87GolfKart)

it does not really depend on compression. it depends on engine detonation.
if you run high compression you have a higher chance on detonating than that same engine with low compression using the same fuel. if you have "perfect fueling" and perfect timing, you can go way over thoes numbers. most people just do an FMU for fueling, and maybe a chip and injectors. this is not "perfect fueling".
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (speed51133)

i hear water injection can solve the detonation problems if done right...its better then just adding more fuels into the combustion
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (87GolfKart)

it can do a few things, but its no magical cure.
the main bennifits for it are to be able to increase your timing.
if your looking to just cool your charge with it, just put in an intercooler.
h20 injection has been around for A LONG time. old 60's muscle cars were using it. there are a few different schools of thought on its bennefits.
timing has alot to do with detonation, its not just fueling.
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (speed51133)

10 psi with stock internals is asking alot from those blocks you can prob run 6-8 safetly, the run 10psi with a gasket and injectors, anything afterthat is some dough
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (AEfwd)

Would you look at that AEfwd is back...where have you been? care to inform us about the specs on your car like everyone wanted to know months ago?...werent you the one who said they bored their engine to a 2.2? hmmm?
Keeping my post on topic, Turbodub, is running 10psi on stock compression and pulling 200 whp...nuff said. check the forced induction forum
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (oneflygti)

wow one fly, flame a little more.. well i posted those specs a while ago in the forum so you can check that out. Anyway no good now anyway, that engine blew up a while ago due to faulty mechanics. So one fly flame away man just tryin to give some advice

Re: How many PSI can these things run? (AEfwd)

no, you never posted ANY inormation on the motor.
it blew up? really? what exactly was the damage?
any pics? diddn't think so!
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (speed51133)

speed you too man? i thought differently of you, no i posted all the specs for the stroker man, if you look back enough you will find it... anyway for your MAYBE serious inquiry, yes, the engine blew up as we made too many runs with not enough fuel, the computer system was providing insuffient spurts to the fuel injectors, Therefore burning out the valves and spliting piston heads to pieces, if you like i can mail you my cracked block. But umm yeah look a little harder and you will find all the specs you need man. Keep flamin man.

You thought better of Speed? Your mistake. Not a flame mind you. He rants and raves so much he's a source of hilarity and amusement to alot of us. Oh no, I've opened myself to the wrath of (drumroll).....Speed!
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (Andrew Stauffer)

actually, rereading my post...

and then speeds...

Im not seeing any flaming...just a couple of guys wondering how you built your last project. No need to get all huffy puffy.
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (oneflygti)

doing a search now...found some interesting information.
quote:

ok ok Done by the machine shop
78.4 mm one piece stoker crank, re-built stroker rods, forged pistons, coated cylinders, new cam and gear, lightweight scat performance lifters,Heavy Duty Main & Rod Bearing Set ,Heavy Duty Cam Bearing Set ,Complete Engine Gasket Kit w/ silicone Rear Seal
what else would you like to know?????

Aefwd...its a shame this blew up...musta cost you a FORTUNE
Re: How many PSI can these things run? (oneflygti)

i remember that information, thats NOTHING!
we all asked for specifics. If you had a 2.2L, you had some serious work done to it. For one thing, you did NOT just drop in pistons. What was your new bore and stroke? What size pistons? Where did you buy the pistons from? What length rods?
these type of questions were NEVER answered. Nor were questions on times at the track and dyno runs.
if you did it, thats really cool, but you MUST inderstand why we all dont believe it.
guess what, i just bored and stroked my Mclaren F1! I bought forged pistons, titanium rods, all new engine gaskets, and new head studs, main studs, and connecting rod studs. I also had the displacment enlarged 800cc's.
Don't believe me? Well, i gave you specifics!!

Thats about enough of that. This is going nowhere fast. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
