The syncros can go at any time with stock HP or upgraded hp
The diff's rivets like to stretch and then eat a hole in the tranny casing causing the tranny oil to leak out and force you to buy a tranny housing. So if you take the tranny out you should at least but in a Bolt kit on the diff. VW even sells a bolt kit because they know of this problem happening with stock HP cars. At the same time you should install a LSD. Frank

i'm planning the LSD for september or so ... maybe a new gearbox too ....

My feeling is not to by a used one that somebody calls good. I'd rather buy a used gear box and then buy new syncros and gears and then build a good gear box. Here is my gearbox setup that I've been collecting parts for: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=152635
