- error - don't read.

i was at the dealership think i should change my oil every 5k miles.
however, it turns out that it's every 10k miles (no wonder they offer me free oil change for life).
anyway, how often do you change yours?

In my opinion, and probably many others, changing your oil every 3k miles will be the best for your car. Later

Every 3k is a waste. 5k is factory spec - read your owners' manual. 7.5-10k is fine if you're out of warranty and using good synthetic oil. This has been talked to death on this forum.

Why is it a waste..people been doing it for years..personally I don't think there's nothing wrong with 3k oil...I mean it's not like it's going to effect the engine or anything, right?

I used to be a mechanic long ago.Ive seen what 7k oil changes has done to motors that had a lot city driving...The motor used to be sludged up big time...But oil technology has come along way..But what can it hurt,rather spend small money on LOF then big motor money....Besides factories recomends longer intervals between LOF to sell thier products to be less maintaince requirements anyway...

It's a waste because the oil can last much longer than 3,000 miles. Even modern mineral-based oil will last 7,500 miles if you use a decent filter. Honda has specified 5w-30 mineral oil changed every 7,500 miles for *years* without problems. Stop thinking that VW doesn't know what they're doing. Or just go waste your money. It's up to you. Several Vortexers have posted the results from their oil analysis tests and found that 5,000 miles is a perfectly safe interval. Those testing synthetics from major makers (Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, LubroMoly) have found it's safe for 10,000 miles between changes when the filter was replaced every 5,000 miles. Europeans have known this for years.
Again, this has been talked to death on the Vortex with little progress.

Very Valid points you raised there..I used mobil 1 synthetic since it came out and change the filter only the 1st 5k and then when it was at 10k I change the oil and filter again...reason being 4 bucks a quart back then was rather pricey..That kept the oil very clean and I was doing highway driving...But city driving does have a different effect on the oil natural breakdown...I giving my views as a technician for 10 years...I have seen what lack of oil changes can do to the internals...
