... is there a "newer" or longer lasting one out there to change it to? Thinking of getting a 2000 Beetle 1.8T Automatic and the online service manual says every 40K miles but the Bentley I have (for my Jetta) says every 80K? any help is appreciated.

I have 2001 1.8T. I had the belt break on Christmas day on the way to grandmas house. I had 73K on the car and drove it hard!! Wished I would have changed mine at 60K. It would have saved me a bundle.
The nice man VWOA told me he'd pay for it, had I had ALL my oil change receipts and VW motor service done by VW. NOT !! OUCH!!
