... is there a "newer" or longer lasting one out there to change it to? Thinking of getting a 2000 Beetle 1.8T Automatic and the online service manual says every 40K miles but the Bentley I have (for my Jetta) says every 80K? any help is appreciated.

The manuals say to inspect them at 40K and 80K. And to replace at 105K. But if it goes, the head is toast. Most around here agree to replace at the 60K mark.

What he said.
If there is even a question in your mind whether to change timing belt or not, just bite the bullet and change it.

replaced mine at 40 because to many of them are going in the 50s. The new belt is supposed to be better but I will replace it again before 100k
