how reliable are subaru engines??

I owned 2 gl wagons (80s) and both engines had blown head gaskets, my friend owned an 86, same thing, blown head gasket, another friend owned a 92 legacy, blown head gasket, did subaru ever fix this problem, did we all just have bad luck? or is this problem not showing up on the newer cars because they are still new, my mom has a 2000 legacy gt wagon, and Id hate to see anything like that happen to that car, even 10 years down the road.

The real problem is that NOBODY takes care of those old Subarus.
Original heads and gaskets on my '89 Subaru *turbo* with 213k - it's not a coincidence that it came with full service records.
The engines are tough but for any car you'll always find drivers who will push the engines as far as they'll go, maintenance-wise.

Yes.

Generally speaking, Subaru engines are known for their reliability and longevity.

Subaru's are reliable all together. Engines and the rest. The tranny's are known to be just a little weak, but unless you have a WRX and you hammer it like crazy that should not be an issue. Subaru makes a good car http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I loved my XT turbo.

This just occured to me, with a flat 4(or 6) engine in a subaru, is the exhaust oriented on the bottom side of the heads and the intake on the top?
Re: how reliable are subaru engines?? (rpj)

Yup. Everything is real easy to get to, too. The plugs, being on the outboard part of the heads, are a little more work (I had to remove the intake "muffler" and the windshield washer bottle), but its not bad. The automatic transmissions even have spin-on filters.

I had an '83 DL wagon with over 200K on it. The body completely rusted apart and it had to be junked, but the engine ran perfectly for the five years I owned it. (I even thought about trying to swap it into another old Sube, then I realized that would be a huge waste of time for a car worth $400.)

One of my friends had an 87 Subaru wagon with 250k mi on it. It still ran fine. He got it up to 70 in second gear once, at which point it started smelling really bad. It was still working fine when his parents sold it on him when he was away at school.
