How reliable are the 2.0 16V mk2's?

I have been into mk3's for the longest time and currently own a gti vr6. However, I am a college student and can't afford my car payments and especially my insurance on the car anymore. I have really started to love the look of the mk2 gtis and jettas alike and I may want to start looking into getting one or the other, but only the 2.0 16V GTI OR JETTA GLI. How reliable are these cars if bought at let's say $100,000 miles or around there? Can they last a lot longer with good care? Thanks. Sorry for my lack of knowledge in the area.

They can pretty much run forever as long as they've been well-maintained. That's the key though...get one that's been well-maintained because otherwise it can turn into a huge headache really fast.

I think they are very good. Watch out for timing belt change. If it brakes...bye bye valves/head...new motor pretty much.
I think they are right behind 8V when it comes to realiability. A little harder to maintain and find parts compared to 8V but not enough to choose 8v over 16 vIMO. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

proper maintenance and regular timing belt changes will mean a long life. I have 198k original miles on my 16v

thanks alot for the prompt help guys. How mod-able are they as far as bolt ons? And very importantly, which ones come with the nice recaro interior? Thanks again.

They run really well with bolt-ons, which are pretty easy to do. Great for a "spirited" daily driver car. If you're looking to get some pretty serious power out of them, you're going to have to some headwork, maybe increase displacement, or go FI...none of which are that inexpensive. And anybody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that all the GTIs and GLis came with Recaro interiors. which are super nice http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Well, my Jetta has well over 200k miles on it and it has been totally reliable for me and the previous owner, of course mine is an 8 valve and it's not fast enough to get out of it's own way.
