Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (rebel_eye)

Ballance match the rods, pistons, crank throughs. ARP everything, High pressure valve springs, Lightened and ballanced crank, modified fuel pump relay. Thats what I did to mine and it sounds wicked bad on the MSD rev-limiter. But the 40mm intake head and crane cam I have stops flowing good at about 7000 RPM, so I have no need to take it to 8000.

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (gearhead455)

that sounds sweet.
I was thinking of a 2.0l bottom end
but id much rather have a nice high revving 1.8l 8v
How do you like it ?
how much HP are you pushing ?
Is this going to co$$$t ?

In addition to what gearhead said, you're going to need to do alot of headwork, freeflowing exhaust, a radical cam and depending in the cam maybe shim-under-bucket solid lifters. The 1.8 8v head in stock trim won't breath well enough to make good power above 6000 rpm. BTW, my buddy's 2.0L-8v race engine revs over 9000rpm

yeah you will need a balanced and blueprinted engine. Mainly balanced. Basiclly a built engine. You will need to make sure the valve train is up to par with springs that can take the rpms and stuff of that nature. you can extrude hone some stuff to get the engine breathing better. This is all a lot of work and money unless you own a machine shop which I doubt you do as most of us don't
Well anyway this is pretty much what the others said but hey I thought I would give my .02 cents.

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (rebel_eye)

I spent about $1700-$2200 just on the motor, parts, machining. Makes good power. Needs a Eurotech head or radical porting to make good power over 7000, But I like my low end where its at. I'm happy with what I got for now.............. But I was thinking rite from the start that this engine would get hosed down with a 100 shot of N2O on 109 blue. $500 on headwork for 30hp or 100hp pay-as-you-play $500 N2O system........... Either way I'm in trouble

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (gearhead455)

ok how about, easier mods to make it rev a lil better and a lil cheaper...
ditch your AC, my car likes to rev more now,
lighten your flywheel, I cant wait,
I dunno other stupid stuff lots of people overlook, MAINTENECE, make sure you TB is clean and properly adjusted, your air flow plate (cis) is too. Your injectors are clean, your O2 sensor is working properly, your timing is good.
Make sure you have the gas and breathing to make power up there. Cam and cam gear.

I did these things and it helped me alot. Its not gas flowed/blueprinted/ARPed or knife edged. Maybe its more throttle response than redline changing but it all helps. If you all want your 8Vs to rev start where its cheaper and easier. I know alot of you (us) over look stuff like that sometimes.
anyone have any other lil easier ways besides major engine work?

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (Dieder)

I am doing a motor rebuild right now and these are just some of the items that I am using for the job:
Small stem head with P&P
GR A headgasket
All ARP
New Clutch with lightened flywheel
Header
Camshaft is Neuspeed 268
Cam gear
and lotza other GOODIES!
I will post pics soon and give you my driving impressions. I will not "REALLY" be able to beat on it until it is broken in but.....I let you know how she revvs.

Reliably consistent 8000+ RPM without balancing, no ARP’s, tired un-rebuilt engine? Good luck, I hope you brought a flack jacket. Kinda why the factory set the fuel pump relay to limit RPM in the high 6000, low 7000. I don't care what you do to the engine externally, clean or remove whatever you want. (NATURALY ASPERATED) VW 8v's power tapers off with any stock head about 6200-7200. even with the most radical cam, The head will just not cut it. Spin it up to 8, all you
got is impressive noise maker after 7000. You need headwork to make power up there.

I understand that... I was just trying to point out a few things that might help besides major head and block work. I was just trying to gather some ideas for those of us that dont have money to buy pistons that are worth their weight in gold.
I shared my tips I used to to get my 8v to rev, I guess it really wasnt the same as you all were talking about. Maybe not as high.

How much gain is there in lightening a flywheel???
and what are the losses?
I'm swapping auto to stick in my Jetta, and if the benefits are grand, then I should mod it now before it goes in.

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (zoinks208)

PROS:
Improved throttle response (your engine will respond well to slight blips of the throttle for downshifts, etc)
Quicker acceleration, especially in lower gears. It won't magically give you 20 HP, but it does make a difference.
CONS:
Cost.
Decreased stall resistance. (If you let out on the clutch too fast and you have a big flywheel, the car may "forgive" you, whereas with the lightened flywheel you have a harder time getting away with being "sloppy". Also a larger flywheel helps smooth out rough idles (caused by cams, for example)

Re: how to get a 8v to revvvvvv (Vdubs)

As a young teenager i actually did something
like that....
A lot of cars have a 'stopper' under the throttle
pedal . I would remove it thinking if the pedal went
further the car would be faster....well, it wasn't

Ahh the crazy teen years.....glad it's over now !!!
