Well, my fender has arrived for my passenger side on the GL.

I now am looking for information on how to remove the old one.

I see that there are bolts on top, in the hood gutter that hold the fender in place, but I was unable to find out the other attachment points on the car.

How do I remove/replace the fenders? where are the bolts located?

Do any of you have scans of bodyshop manuals?

I would be forever greatful

Thanks,

Luke

the best thing for you is go invest 10 bucks and get a haynes/bentley manual and all your questions about your car will be answered. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
i dunno about your question though, i've never had to take my fenders off. i am also curious.

I have the Haynes manual.

it doesn't tell how to remove fenders.

I have a Robert Bentley manual for my Volvo and it doesn't show how to do body work either, so I"m assuming the VW manual wouldn't show this either.

But I figured enough of you guys have installed euro spec fenders, etc..

that someone would know

I just need to know the places to unbolt..

The Bentley tells you how to remove the fenders. I don't have it in front of me, but someone might be able to scan you the page. It mentions having to replace some one time use only film though.

My jetta is now more tricked out than any of yours:

haha
swapping fenders turned out to be fairly simple.

Now to figure out how much the bodyshop is wanting to charge to have it sprayed white.

Wouldn't it be easier to have painted the fender before installing it on the car?

You should have had the fender painted first. Your going to now have to spend some extra coin for a tech to tape and mask off your car. Mitchell Ultra-Mate allows 2.2 labour units to refinish the right front fender. So I'd say your looking at between $200-$400, depending on where you go.

Re: How to remove and install a front fender on my 95 Jetta GL. (VRSexed)

Nah,

I am going to remove the fender first before taking it in.

the original fender was just all jagged and would rub the door when opened.

It took me like 15 minutes to get the fender off/on after I figured out the procedure.

The passenger door has a dent at the trimpiece area where it meets the fender, so it needs pulled/painted as well.

I'm just going to drive it in tomorrow and get a quick estimate.

I'll have the fender off for them if I decide to drop the money to have it painted white.

It's also a good thing I did remove the fender, because I found a mess-up by the previous owner.

The airbox lid was not seated in the hinge. (see below)

And dirt/water/other crap was getting into the intake (most likely gacking up my mass airflow meter)

so it's a good thing I found this before the first snow fall when they salt the roads.

Here's the two photos (btw, I think VW dropped the ball on that design issue, where the airbox protrudes into the fender area (the original plastic wheel well liner would protect it though I guess))

Re: How to remove and install a front fender on my 95 Jetta GL. (TWSTDVW)

To remove the fender:

there are 5 hex screws on the top hood gutter. (easy to find)

then there are two hex screws that attach the fender to the fire wall area. They are covered in tarlike goop that protects the fender from rust and possibly aids in noise reduction.. scrape the nut head off with a flathead scredriver.

And then tehre are two hex screws that are hidden behind teh front bumper.. to get at them, I undid one nut that holds the bumper on to the side of the car and I pushed it down out of the way (rather forcefully) so I could access these screws.

All the screws are identical. 10mm head socket.

9 in all I think..(maybe 10) most located on the hood gutter.

Then to install a new fender, I had to break that little rail thing free from the top of the old fender (hammering and chisel) then I took a grinder to grind down the pieces of fender that came along with it when busting it free)

installation of fender is reverse of removal (as Haynes would say)

Re: How to remove and install a front fender on my 95 Jetta GL. (VEEDUBJETTA)

for the second time...

I am going to remove the black fender, take it in to have it painted.

it was from Taiwan and I wanted to see if it would fit.

The old fender rubbed on the door and tire at times.

The cost to have the fender colormatched is 90 dollars. (I don't find that to be terribly expensive)

and for the time being I have the luxury of looking like dirty white trash when driving around town.

Classic. And I love the Haynes installation is the reverse of removal line, especailly considering they never give you that much info in terms of the removal to begin with!!!

yes, the BFH is a tool that appears in every Iowans garage I think.

It just varies how much the head weighs.. 5, 10, 15 pound sledge.

haha..

if I'm not gonna mill old rotors, the bfh works wonders to remove them without the use of heat.
