I just bought a 2000 Golf GLS and would like to change the shift knob. I've read that it can be difficult from other postings so I figured that before I start messing around with it and do some damage I'd ask for some help. So if anyone could tell me the steps to removing the stock knob, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Lift up the boot so you can see the ****ing rod. There will be a small metal band that you need to cut or pry open. Once that is done you can lift the assembly off. (I may be missing something its been a little while)

Re: how to remove shift knob (reverend5150)

first go here for this type of stuff

you'll find this

mine went real smooth until i ran into that brass ring that holds the knob on. biggest pain in my arse. make sure you have "tin snips" or something to cut it with, i had to pry mine off with a screwdriver and maw my old knob
