Yet again, my father has found us a possible diamond in the rough:

1994 BMW Touring 5 series Wagon. Gold, body & int very good cond, doesn't run. $2200 OBO.

Our thought is to drop a V8 & Six speed from a 540 in it to create a real unique sleeper... We are thinking around an $8K budget to get the work done professionally, do y'all think its possible?

I love the idea! Have no comments as to its budget/feasability though.

possible to do yes, for 8 grand i doubt it. i bet that if double that i wouldn't be suprised that if at the end of the day you still spent more.

8k for a professional job won't cut it, it will be more like 15k, you could do it yourself though and the whole thing would be about 10k

Just checked out http://www.bavengine.com and the crate 540 motor is going to be $5,945... so we could probably get the motor installed for 8K total, but without touching the tranny...

What engine was in the dead car? If it was a 530i, you're probably pretty well on your way. All of the parts exist for this swap; you're just going to have to deal with hunting them down and sorting it out....

right there is another $2,500 easily.
i'd do something like that myself. screw sending it to someone else. DIY is great because of not only the learning experience, but the sense of "it's done, it's awesome, and i did it myself."

I know of a guy that did this conversion.

If you're serious about the project, he's a great guy and I'm sure he'd give you some info. I'm sure if you do some searches on one of the two following links you'll find a couple write ups he did when he was going through the process...

a cheaper mode would be the e36 m3 motor and tranny(around 4k)... and then put it in.. which should meet your budget. If you have more money left over SC the sucker. The V8 and tranny should cost you a prettpenny.
also you could get a m30 (535) swap a manual in there.. and turbo charge the thing.

I would really be interested to know how much it costs, because I would be the happiest person in the world if I could get a manual transmission into an Imola E38 740i Sport. I know it has been done by someone, but I don't know what it cost them.

Sounds like a neat idea for a 540i Touring as well.

This guy did that 740i 6-spd swap, and then put a supercharger on it...

There is one of those around here that is lowered with some beautiful 18 inch wheels on it...the car is pure sex on wheels.

The plot thickens...
So my dad went and took a look at the car yesterday. Turns out it already has a V8. Was I mistaken, I thought the 530 was a straight 6?

It also has a manu-matic transmission... so apparently someone has already monkeyed with this car a good bit. The owner swears the engine isn't blown, it just lost a couple radiator hoses
Whatever...
Anyways, I think we're going to pass. We still want to find that elusive E500.
