im just about to change my cat...and the piping of my exhaust system....what kind of piping do you guys run on your 2.0??? im thinking of 2.5 all the way through..and does anyone have a hyperformance cat???or hollowed out cat?...big difference in noise? any info is appreciated....
some people say 2.5 is a bit big for a n/a 2.0...but im just curious if any of you run it ...and notice a decrease or increase in performance?...TIA

Actually I like a 2.5! It's a healthy size for your car bro!
Re: hyperformance cats and exhaust sizing for the 2.0.... (Golf_CL)

Seriously i'd stay with 2.25" with a good 2.25" cat, Car Sound cat(we out flow everyone else and make the only cat that close to VW with flow, TT cats our ours) and magnaflow muffler. Unless you want top end and no buttom end dont go 2.5"
Im running 2.25 on my vr and its just fine.
With a aftermarket cat youll notice more ressonance, trust me i just put one only to take it off for another a day later. Call Eurosport ask for raffi and talk to him about Cat's.

I've heard 2.25 should be all you go unless you F/I. Ive seen some somewhere but I forgot. If you get ahold of 16v cat will be just as good also.

Well said by someone who has never driven a 2.0L with a 2.5" exhaust. You guys speak with no real experience...

Waterpumper's 2.0L cabrio is one of the strongest normally aspirated ABA street legal motors here on Vortex and has dyno's to prove it.
I have driven it myself and compared it to mine. My car with 2.25" exhaust is only marginally faster off the line than Brandon's but his kills me up top. This is also due to the fact his Kent 260 has a 11.17mm lift and my Schrick 260 only a 11.0mm lift. So that in conjunction with his larger exhaust flows way more freely.
So unless you have experience with the mods people are asking about, don't post misleading info...

i have a 272 camshaft...adjustable cam gear.. chip blah blah blah all that good stuff ....so you drove both ...and seen much more pick up through the whole powerband with the 2.5? as apose to your 2.25?
......does vwtech run a cat?what does his whole exhaust system run?

blow it out your ass,
i work for a exhaust company and DO have experince with it. We've dyno tested several 2L's with 2.5" and lost power with those.
Secondly he never said, I have cam's/ and headwork what exhaust is for me.
He merely said 2L and 2.5"
So you sir can go Fak yourself.
And to top it off, i did have a 2L w/ 2.5" exhaust, 85 gti w/ a built 3A block and headwork, and i still preferred my 2.25" system to it.
In addition to that EVERY exhaust company's stuff flows differently, we Magnaflow flow really well and 2.5" was to much for a NA 2L

Let's see some proof then...where's your dyno sheets? Because I have some for you Mister Exhaust Company employee. This doesn't look like a horsepower loss to me. But what do I know about exhausts...

So why didn't you ask for more information before answering. I've seen Stealthdemondub's posts before and know some of the mods he's done.

Pretty mature...

A 3A motor is not an ABA motor. They don't tune the same. Why do you think most of the Mk1 & Mk2 guys swap the ABA into their cars?
Fine, you prefer 2.25" exhausts...my whole issue is with you spouting falsehoods without proof.

If you do work for MagnaFlow...I have lost all respect for your company based on your unprofessional response to my post.

I couldnt give 2 rat's asses about your opinion, and i can guarantee theres about 150 people up here who ive hooked up exhausts through group buys and they could vouch for my professionalism.
Re: hyperformance cats and exhaust sizing for the 2.0.... (Lord of the Blings)

Wow drama! Im no expert but if the 2.5 was good why dont they sell it over the 2.25? Im just wondering not to flame. I know they sell 2.5 for VR's but not for 2.0's.
Re: hyperformance cats and exhaust sizing for the 2.0.... (Lord of the Blings)

ok. . . I am talking from what I know. My freind had a 95 Jetta 2.0 with 2.5 exhaust. He seemed to have really good top end because he could chirp the tires into 2 maybe 3 and that was with just his cheap made exhaust (2.5 piping and some universal muffler), and an abd intake that's it. Me with my 97 and my 2.25 exhaust I really can't do it, or at least haven't heard it. I have 16's and different tires. His were harder rubber so that could have helped him with the chirp.
So basically from what I know and what you have on your motor I would say go with the 2.5. This is because you have a fairly large cam so you will be flowing more air than a stock 2.0. Also since you have the gear if you don't have enough low end for your liking you can adjust and pick up a little more.
I think if you were to get 2.25 you would not be getting all the top end you could get out of it, which is what I think you are going for with that cam and your other mods.
I would also say get a high flow cat. Don't knock it out. For two reasons you will have trouble passing inspection. And you will definatly loose some low end.
So I would say get a good high flow cat with the 2.5 and you should get a good feel out of it. Then just mess with the gear to fine tune the power you want. Either way good luck with your decision. By the way I love the Jetta

No drama from my end. I'm not upset with anyone...I just request accurate postings.
There are exhaust companies out there that make larger diameter exhausts for 2.0L, they are from tuners in Germany though. Hartmann Motorsports makes a 70mm application for the 2.0L.

I have no problem with my 2.25" exhaust I have now. I like it. If I beef up my motor more, I will definitely get a larger exhaust to match. Especially if I go forced induction.

stealth- before i became a member of the FI family- i was running TT racing downpipe to Random Technologies cat ( 2.25") - put it my 266 cam and gear and THEN the exhaust and the diff was night and day- things flowed very well and the price was nice also ( TT dp- $175, Random cat $175) sorry-cant chime in on the 2.50"- but in the spring i can tell you what 3" is like(w/the t3/4of coarse)

Stealth, 2.25
smaller diameter pipe will help you keep what you have on the bottom when you cam the hell out of it....

and smaller pipe sounds so sweet. just ask anyone who has heard my car

it friggin rips!

Re: hyperformance cats and exhaust sizing for the 2.0.... (VolkSchnell-GTI)

Just a thought - the VR6 comes with 2.25' exhaust? Even with a cam I doubt our 2.0's can move enough air to overwhelm a 2.25" exhaust. That being the case we would be moving a volume of air closing in on a stock VR - not sure that is possible.
Re: hyperformance cats and exhaust sizing for the 2.0.... (WolfGTI)

keep the stock cat, and go 2.25, doing an aftermarket cat, or hollowing out with sound bad, IMO. yeah, vr6's come stock with 2.25, because they are bigger engines and need to breath more than our 2.0's. Unless your doing FI, go 2.25.

Sounds good to me! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
But on serious note, the theory of a stock VR6 running 2.25" piping makes sense to me. If your NA 2.0 produces what a stock VR6 produces, then 2.25" is all you need. I don't know anything about canyon driving, so you gotta ask yourself if top end power or low end power is beneficial for your driving application.
