I can't get it!
Is there a secret to this? I tried unscrewing it and damn near passed out.
Any help would be appreciated.
Those damn germans and their grip of death.

If you'e referring to the shift knob, and not the actual shifter, then you need to remove the shift boot and remove a little clamp at the base of the shift knob that helps secure it to the shifter.

If you push the frame that holds the leather shift boot towards the front of the car you can pop it out of the center console. Then lift it up and you can see why you weren't able to pull the knob off. Mine looks like it has some type of one time use clamp on it.
