Oh wait...which came first?

I hereby request that clear taillights from now on me called "Allantes", not "Altezzas".

They are clear, but not round.

Mmm...Cadillac Allante. Hey at least it looked nice

I'm just wondering, didn't the whole Altezza light scheme originate in Europe?

I'm pretty sure that's a myth.. I seem to remember a comment from someone about how they're being advertised as "Euro-style" but that that was far from the truth.
I'm personally not sure though.. I don't think I've ever seen a european car with them from the factory.
Re: I can't believe Cadillac copied off of the Altezza... (CanuckPal)

erm, not to spoil the joke, but Altezza lights arent just clear lensed lights, they're clear lenses with one or more round red lights inside.
clear/white taillights existed long before the Allante. Check out this 1965 Chrysler New Yorker:

By the way Altezza lights, and the all-clear lights to come before them, have been called "euro lights" because of the rather oddly-named "euro" trend amongst lowriders, that has nothing to do with Europe, really. Pick up a copy of Lowrider Euro if you're curious.

Wasn't that Caddy designed by Pinnifarina?

Yes it was http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
You guys think that and the Reatta will be collectors items?

Yep! It's spelled "Pininfarina" though.

That's off the 1962-1965 Mopar site (http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com) which is a GREAT site btw. Yes, they are clear lights but NOT Altezzas. And as you can see, on a New Yorker they do look neatly integrated and in fact even classy (the '65 Chrysler happens to be among my favourite all-time designs, especially New Yorkers). That pic comes from the readers' rides section, it's a '65 New Yorker 4-dr hardtop which has done 400,000 miles! Truly astonishing, which goes to show how darn good these cars are.

I think they all copied from the 65 Impala.

Chevys had round taillights for at least a few years before then I believe...
Re: I can't believe Cadillac copied off of the Altezza... (CanuckPal)

He he, there is nothing clear about those "Allantes". Clear means that you can see through something, that it is transparent. The Allante was successful in launching the "foggy-white" taillight trend.

Nice, but the Mazda RX-3's are even closer to altezzas:

Some RX-3s even had a silver trim panel around the lights instead of black.

Yes, and they built the body panels as well, which were then shipped to the U.S. for final assembly.

That's to show you that no one is perfect, not even Pininfarina

Like this one, which I always post in response to "Altezza" threads..:

All the Altezza did was to put the lights as seen on the RX3 under clear plexiglass.

Yep... so the clear glass isn't the light as such- it's merely the surrounds.
Re: I can't believe Cadillac copied off of the Altezza... (2lowA4)

Yes I think the Allante and Reatta will be collectors items. At the time when they were new, they were kinda overpriced, didn't sell to well, and different from the rest of the line. I think they'll be worth a pretty good price in the future, not super collectable, but have respectable value.
